Title: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on March 03, 2011, 12:20:48 PM
Well sadly I've failed to organise a winter marathon meaning we had to skip it, but summer is on the way and with enough free time at hand I'm not going to let that one fail. Last year me, Sixty and some friends filled in a good 50 hours and since we had so much fun we're even going to see if we can manage 3 full days this year. Of course we'll hope that as many people as possible will help us out extending that time to the max :D

Marathon date:
Around the first Weekend of August (6th & 7th). Precise starting date & time will follow.

Participants:
Players                                   Planned Games                                                Planned Timeslot         Timezone
Da_Cloud, Sixty & the rest Final Fantasy VIII & IX 3 Days (72 hours) GMT+2
xShadowBlitzx Final Fantasy VI ?? GMT+1
greeksephiroth ?? ?? ??
Shadow Gilgamesh Paper Mario 12 Hours Approx GMT-5
Yuichan The Last Remnant 8-20 Hours GMT+2

I had fun last year, even though practically everybody ditched my section, and i can take part again depending on when my parents go on holiday. I get to stay at home this time meaning i should be able to do any time section if i'm home alone at that time.

I am in off course, oh and Bram i never give them my summer vacation schedule. I let them know a few weeks in advance.

games we could do:

PSP
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of The Lions
Final Fantasy I
Kingdom Hearts BBS

Maybe Dissidia 012 in between somewhere.

PS3
White Knight Chronicles
Final Fantasy XIII (i cant remember for certain if this was done last year)

PS2
Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus
Final Fantasy X & X-2 (we should do these right after each other)
Final Fantasy XII

NGC
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (maybe this time we can go for finishing it)

These are only games that we can do which i believe weren't used last year and i have in my collection. So please add your own games which you want to do.

I had fun last year, even though practically everybody ditched my section
I tried to watch, but after 50 hours of little sleep I only had two options left:
1) Taking an unhealthy amount of caffeine to stay awake.
2) Taking a long nap :-X

I am in off course, oh and Bram i never give them my summer vacation schedule. I let them know a few weeks in advance.
But I can't, my position kinda requires me to let them know in advance when I want to have a day off ::)

True, but our main Q is where are we gonna do the marathon. I am not sure if i live with my parents when its summer. At least if everything goes as planned.

would there be enough time for FFX and X-2 even if you rush through X it still takes a long time

I can rush through FFX within 24 hours. If I prepare enough I should be able to do it within 20 hours as well. FFX-2 is a different story though, as I haven't played that one enough to really say how long it would take :-X

Sixty I don't see a problem there, if you don't live with your parents any more then you don't have to find a time frame in which you don't bother them :P

Yeah but then i have 2 other people who i can bother. Except for 1 of them who probably wants to help again.

i think my usual runs are 20-40 hours including when im getting celestial weapons and if im using standard i could probaly finish it faster

For that you'll have to check ustream as that's probably what we are going to use.

Unlike the previous years, I probably won't join in on the streaming because, I don't think it's worth my time to be honest. My internet has gotten progressively worse over the years, so that's been another minus.

i'll try again for this one, but i'm still flipfloping on if i'm gonna take a summer class or not, so i don't really know how long my summer break will be

What charities did we play for in the previous marathons? Just curious

Last year we didn't have any.

Also how about trying to get a theme together this year. Me and sixty can quite easily to both Kingdom Hearts I & II in a single run. And if Jacob is available to do Birth By Sleep we already have half the games covered.

I also have the remake of Chain of Memories here, should nobody be able to cover that game. Though unfortunately I'm not really good in that game ::)

Well the only KH game i can practically stream is KH2, BBS i could do if my psp didn't decide to crash on the save screen when using remotejoy.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on March 04, 2011, 10:14:58 AM
Well we can always shift who plays what. I've got almost all the KH games, and the only games which I can't stream for sure are the DS ones.

Its just I like the idea of having an actual 'theme' instead of just another set of random games if you get what I mean.

Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Sixty on March 04, 2011, 11:29:24 AM
If i can get a decent camera too help stream, i might be able to stream DS games. Or we could find a PC that can stream and can run the DS Emulator without any lag on the PC itself.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Chaos on March 04, 2011, 01:44:48 PM
I can only stream games from my PC and only if my upload speed gets better. They said it would get increased to 384 kbps soon, so I gotta see if that's any good (I bet all of you have faster than 1 Mbps). It's still too early for me to say if I'll be able to participate. Good thing is there's always the sub stream. :D

Seems I do have some decent connection after all ::)
For the record that is done with a wireless laptop on the third floor with the router being on the first. Though I will admit I'm the only person in the house right now. The Netherlands do have quite a decent internet connection considering that this is done with one of the cheapest packages.

Looking at mine i know my Download speed is incorrect, my upload speed ALWAYS caps at 200-215kb/s when i'm on the internet alone. Something is fishy here.

God... and I thought I was the one with bad Internet.

4 Mbps download / 256 kbps upload here. The problem is that the quality is kinda bad, so my download and upload speeds vary sometimes. It gets really bad in the evening (huge latency, 0.5 dl/ 0.05 ul), I hope they fix this problem.

@Shadow (both of you): do you have problems streaming?
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Shadow Gilgamesh on March 04, 2011, 04:05:46 PM
usually not, i used to be a regular co-host on tebs stream, and did it from my own channel
it didn't like when i used the webcam at my TV, but i don't do that anymore.

every once in a while it'll be a little laggy, but closing all unnessesary programs/restarting the computer usually fixes it
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Zeikuu on March 04, 2011, 04:09:13 PM
I Don't have particular problems stream, just lower the quality a bit and it becomes near laggless.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on March 05, 2011, 04:25:34 PM
Streaming doesn't really require a massive internet connection any more. At default internet connections are getting better and better by the year anyway, at least here in the Netherlands the connections get better by the year ;D

Also note this is just for the fun. I won't expect much viewers to begin with so don't expect you'll be streaming in front of a massive audience. Not unless we find enough people to do the whole final fantasy franchise after each other, pulling such thing off is bound to attract a few outsiders :P

Should we stick to a Kingdom Hearts marathon would you be able to play a Kingdom Hearts game as well, or just a part from a Kingdom Hearts game?

i might be able to do Re: Coded or Days if we do that

EDIT:as it stands it'd have to be days, my emulator doesn't seem to want to play any 2011 games for some reason :P
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: RedChocobo on March 07, 2011, 03:45:17 PM
Well both games I mentioned are SE published games...
I can do many others as well, but not on Portable Consoles. Maybe KH: BBS If I can get my hands on a standard cable connector for my PSP to the TV.

Or FINAL FANTASY 6! :D If I can find it. D:
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)

The only problem with Kingdom hearts as a theme is the only games that you can easily stream are 1/2/Re:CoM/BBS, the others become more of a huge pain to do so.

Looking at the amount of spinoffs I'm guesing that would become to much as well :-\ We really don't have that much streamers available. I'm guessing we have 4 people now of which 3 don't know if they are available during the time.

We could do some old school RPG's. like the original final fantasy's, or maybe Chrono Trigger. Then you have different games but still a decent theme.

My sister said that they're going on holiday on the 4th august, now of course i'm going to need to confirm that with my parents when they get in but that seems to be my time i can stream. If it's old school RPG's i need to find something i could do then, only Old school RPG i've got left that possibly works is FFVI on the PSX. I'd have to check and then it comes down to how fast i can finish it.

The PS2 is not old school, the PSX is. So is the Snes and Nes. And anything else that comes near that time frame. Anyone has a Sega Dreamcast?
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)

Personally I would draw the line of old school by the psOne, and other fifth gen consols. Mainly because sixth gen consols are still widely used.

I'm pretty sure they did, at least mine did. I used to have this adaptor that connected to my aerial port on my tv with a switch on it to change the input from the tv aerial to the console one. I bet it would probably be up in the attic with my N64 but i can't be sure. I don't believe i had any RPG's on my N64 regardless.

A new cable for the SNES/N64 which uses the normal AV cables can be bought for less than $5,-. So if your SNES still works its quite easy to get it stream ready :D

See Ebay auction here (http://cgi.ebay.com/SNES-Nintendo-N64-Gamecube-AV-lead-TV-cable-scart-/140517333013?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item20b77c5815#ht_1760wt_1139)

Oh Jake, that ocarina of time is Master quest which is harder dungeons, that would be hell to do if I did do that even though it's not RPG, YOU'D be sitting next to me the whole time to guide me through it. I'll test FFVI tonight, i have no idea how long it'd take me to complete that. Eternal Sonata took me 10 hours last year but that is a short RPG for RPG standards.

Speedrunners done FFVI in 4:48. Not saying you can represent that during a live stream, but it might help giving you some ideas :D

Yes i know that, but a FFVI speed run is HIGHLY luck reliant, i tried it before. There are 2 sections where you get enforced battles and you get a chance to have different set of enemies. There is 1 set which make it faster than the rest, not to mention all bosses using Joker doom which you can make 100% chance but requires tons of practice. Suffice to say i'll never ever ever ever ever go that fast. Bear i mind this is depending if my disc fully works.

That's why I only said it might give you some nice ideas ;)

I've never seen that speedrun as I've only seen her run on FFX, which really helped me out speeding up the game.

BTW Sixty which games did you have in mind yourself for our own run. The only retro rpg's that I've finished myself are Mystic Quest and the first Suikoden. I do have FFI, FFII, FFIV, FFV and FFVI lying around here, but I've never fully finished those games (well I did finish some remakes of FFI & FFII, but the psOne versions are a lot harder).

Right my FFVI disc seems to be working so far, it's at the main menu and it's playing the game. I guess it will work but it does have some scratches so i am have to go complete it to check. So it seems like i can stream FFVI in the marathon for NOW.

I finished FFI the remake.
I guess you don't know the difference in difficulty between FFI on the PSOne and FFI on the PSP let me just say that FFI on the PSOne is like 10 times harder if not even more. So I'm not going to do that one unless I've finished it first ::)

So maybe we can do that. And don't forget we got Peer for FFVIII & FFIX.
FFIX alone is probably worth for a good 30-40 hours. So if we are going to do that one then we'll already have half our slot filled in.

Could you try going for Excalibur II? Or does it require tons of restarts?

Getting that sword on an US copy is already quite hard, but doing a Excalibur II run on an Pal version is even harder. Something to do with the 60/50 HZ difference. I've never done one before so it will be nearly imposible during a live stream.

Hmm i've been thinking about how to go about FFVI, I do know that once i get Mog in the WoR i can SPEED AHEAD because of Molulu's charm making it no-encounter apart from bosses, i'll be getting 12 characters and do a BIT of spell grinding, i want 6 people with curaga at least. I'll have to do a casual run and see how fast i do that.

Don't worry about what to do with FFVI. I've watched several different streams of FFVI and the viewers enjoy watching the game so much, they don't even care about watching grinding for items or leveling. I watched one stream where 3 people were playing FFVI and switching off. They were fighting that thing in the water from the dock over and over and over for hours on end and people didn't get tired of watching it. You wouldn't have to do the whole game either, just whatever parts you want and people still like it anyway.

My sister said that they're going on holiday on the 4th august, now of course i'm going to need to confirm that with my parents when they get in but that seems to be my time i can stream.
If shadow can confirm he can join in when we do it during the first few days of august I'd say we'll have a date.

Also the timeslots are partly your's to fill in. Just say how long you're planing to stream and during which hours you can stream, after that I'll try to make a schedules which gives everybody the best possible timeslots.

And it looks like i can stream FF6 without a doubt.

Well I've filled in my vacation form to give me free for the first three weeks of August. Along with xShadowBlitzx being able to game around the 6th or 7th of august I'd say we'll be going for that same weekend for sure.

I'll be going to see with Sixty at which point we can join in, which will mainly depend from where we'll be able to stream. Now if xShadowBlitzx will help with pushing ASephiroth to join us as well ;D

Marathon date: Around the first Weekend of August. Precise starting date & time will follow.

Participants:
Players                                   Planned Games                                                Planned Timeslot         Timezone
Da_Cloud, Sixty & the rest Final Fantasy VIII & IX 3 Days (72 hours) GMT+2 (summer time)
xShadowBlitzx Final Fantasy VI ?? GMT

Of course i'll be pushing him, my parents are going on holiday for 2 weeks so i'm free for 2 weeks starting the 6th. I wonder, would you class Golden sun and Golden Sun TLA as old school...

/me has had a thought that may mean jake can join in

Well as said before Old School is just a theme, but not a binding one. If you for example want to join an can only stream FFXIII I'm not going to hold you back. Its about having fun in the first place ;)

So if you want to add Golden Sun be my guest, those where made following the old school styles so if I can do Final Fantasy IX who am I to hold back Golden Sun ;D

I'm doing FFVI Without a doubt, but if jake has that Gamecube addon that allows you to play gameboy advance games on your gamecube then he can come to mine then he can do golden sun then i can follow into golden sun the lost age of course not near my FFVI segment otherwise i'll be screwed for sleep. Andrew has enough to choice from. I'm guessing the main problem with Andrew would be finding a free moment.

Also I wonder if Jacob has the strength left to join us. He's been organising a Final Fantasy marathon with the community of the TSG which takes place in the last week of July ::)

Game Boy player (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Player)

Basically it would allow you to play golden sun on your gamecube then if you stayed at my house you could've streamed that with my dazzle. I chose that game for you as i know you can finish that in a respectable time.

Sixty for only 9,99 you can buy them from the psn store. Peer has them as well so since you sharing stuff anyway why not get it from his psn ::) We'll probably have to reconsider doing FFVIII anyway. I might be able to do it within a reasonable time on my own, but known your and peers play style I'll doubt you'll be able to keep up. Not that I have a good alternative on my mind though :-\

Hai ppl,

i am not that active anymore, due to school/studying for abitur in germany. Also, i have been invited to an assessment center for this weekend, so i am not sure if i can participate. But if i can, i am interested to participate in this marathon.
Now with my fairly now pc, i should be able to participate from early morning to evening, something like 8-20 or so, depends on what you want. i even could start in the night, if you want me to :D.

The problem is, that i can not play any pre-PSX-games on stream. The only thing, that i can play SE-oriented, Square-oriented or Enix-oriented is The Last Remnant.

I hope some people remember me. I have not been active lately, so it'd be no problem if you don't, but i just want to show my interest in this marathon.

*EDIT*: Yes i do know its in August. If i get a jbo at the center, i am off at July, so...

Greetings,

Yuichan.

yea sorry i was so busy with school and such, couldn't be active too much here, but i like that you don't have problems with me only being able to play TLR.

Well we do rarely see this awesome game streamed, so it might be fun. But i am sure that i can not finish the whole game. But i will try to go as far as possible, and when time runs out, i will load up a save to beat the final boss.

When I spend another 9,99 for a game I already own, just to spare myself from using the discs then why should I even consider them to leave my room. It might just be a platinum version, but even those are hard to come by these days.

Also xShadowBlitzx since the forum update the standard forum time has shifted from standard EST to local Amsterdam time (aka the zone in which the server itself is located). So GMT-5 sounds like the correct time (GMT+2 - GMT-7 = GMT-5) ;D

You can get one from amazon, Currys used to sell them but not anymore. You could also get an easy cap which is TONS CHEAPER. If you was to get a dazzle i can help you sort it out provided the one you get will work with your operating system which i believe is windows 7 64-bit IIRC.

As long as you keep the breaks reasonable. For the rest whenever you need to do something important you've got to do it, the last thing that I want to read is how a young teenager was found death behind his console after participation in an online gaming marathon. The gaming world has had enough criticism because of incidents like that already :-X

For streaming from your PC you'll be needing some kind of desktop capture program, but I don't know much about those programs myself.

The time limitation is sort of yours to decide. It might variate a bit depending on how I can fit the schedules together, but if you lets say want to stream 6 hours I'll try to give you 6 hours ;D

And the date is set around the 6th of August. We've got quite a bunch of players this time so we'll probably fit in a few days before/after that weekend of the 6th, but the actual weekend is currently used as an reference so that people can arrange that they'll be able to stream during that time.

Use either ManyCam or xSplit. We'll probably do the marathon on ustream. Make an account there and find the broadcasting page. Under video source select ManyCam / xSplit. That's it, you're live! :)

I can't get xsplit to work with the online broadcaster, i have to use producer for it as it just comes up saying "please enable virtual camera" even when it is.

I've had a few problems getting live with it, too. I think it's working okay now. There's even an option that allows you to broadcast without having the ustream page open, but the drop down menu with the channel lists never worked for me. :-\

I tried using xsplit to broadcast itself but it just crashed the stream so i used xsplit as a camera device having my dazzle picked up in xsplit then use xsplit in producer. Only sad thing is that you can't have co-hosting and can't use 16:9 or it crashes the program.

Right jake said he can do Kh2 but i'm going to get him to play through it first, if he can do it i'd like it if me and him stream on different days as i'm going to have to be up for all of jakes segment as he'll not know how to stream meaning if asleep and something goes wrong then we are kind of screwed.

Just letting you know this topic hasn't died out. I'll try to form a quick schedules at the end of this week. Nothing official yet, but it mainly helps me looking how well we can fit in everybody with a timeslot that fits them the best.

Also I found a nice deal for a Gamecube with Gameboy Player. I'm expecting to get it at the end of this week and if it works as it should be we'll probably be going to play the first two Golden Sun games instead of Final Fantasy VIII.

I'm guessing he should be able to run his way through the game in 9 hours. (skipping cut scenes and optional worlds)

LoL = League of Legends? What else is LoL? :O

And I might be able to screen record some stuff through streaming though I've never tried it before. I can screen record my desktop perfectly fine, though I can't get a good commentary done (as I intend to do Let's Plays, I find raw content to be a bit boring) yet. Still fiddling with the settings and stuff of Camstudio and my Turtlebeaches >_<. So yeah, if I know how to stream through Ustream and am able to do a live commentary session, I might do it though I'm only able to do commentaries when no one's in the house :/. So maybe I can stream, maybe I can't. I'd just fill a gap if there is one ^^
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on April 12, 2011, 09:52:49 PM
Some of us aren't doing commentary streams as well. Not everybody here is able to set up a full stream along with commentary, mainly because Ustream itself only accepts 1 sound input.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Ergunno on April 12, 2011, 10:23:15 PM
Well, when I record with Turtlebeaches, I hear myself perfectly fine but the game sound is just really soft though it still is 1 sound input, I know that much. I'd probably be able to stream without commentary. Maybe something like a GBA, Sega anything game but I don't think I can do PS1 or Neo Geo games with my mere 600 something upload speed. I'll fiddle around on Ustream when  have time to see if I can set up a normal stream without commentary.

My timer usually finishes on 12~13 hours which includes getting all the djinns and defeating the optional boss. But this time I'm really going for speed. I'm guessing Kolima Bridge is around the 1/3 way point, so I'm quite pleased with the time set so far.

Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on April 14, 2011, 12:28:54 PM
Having four of each is a permanent must for the boss as you'll need four djinns to learn stuff as wish (mia), or revive (isaac). But apart from that it should be doable to defeat the boss without having all the djinns.

But I'll get them all anyway, as we'll be going to need them when playing Golden Sun II. Now that game is what worries me, beating the Doom Dragon requires some work and I don't think we'll have the time to set up a perfect team :o
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)

Doom Dragon is ALL luck reliant in the end, you could be lucky and only get cruel ruin but if you get djinn storm and then cruel ruin expect for a wipe at lowish levels, even at high levels expect for multiple characters to be killed off.

Revive only requires 4 earth djinns to learn, but I you'll also need to be level 18 or 19 before you learn it.

And Doom Dragon is always though. Only with really overpowered characters you'll survive his djinn storm/cruel ruin combination. Heck with low level characters a cruel ruin alone can wipe you out if your not paying attention.

But having an backup team which automatically swaps in when the front team is down might be the key to winning this battle. The chances of him using Djinn Strom are lower during the first phase of the game. And a full summon charge will definitely bring in some damage.

If someone could help me to stream PSX games (Recording them causes major lagg on my end but I don't know if it's like that when streaming), I could do Crash Bandicoot 3 105% in a few hours :P. I know it's not an RPG but it's one of my favorite games of all time and just speed running the game, I can probably do it pretty *Bleep* fast though it's just my nature to destroy every box in sight so it might take longer :P. Just an idea that if someone could help me set up a screen recording thing with Ustream, I'd be able to do that to fill any gap :)
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)

He only gets Djinn storm in the final stage, on the first 2 stages he has djinn blast which removes all Djinn from a single character instead. Combine that with cruel ruin in his stage stage and you can still see a character easily wiped.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on April 14, 2011, 12:59:21 PM
1 Character can be easily revived and brought back into the fight. Its the entire party wiped out that's causing the trouble. But if he only does Djinn storm during his last phase it wouldn't be to hard to set up all reserve characters ready to summon his to his doom. Still risky as they would be slow that way, but if I'm lucky enough he doesn't wipe out the backup party with an early cruel ruin :D

@Ergunno what is the range of equipment you've got to stream/record games. You using capture cards or are you planning on using emulators with software that captures your desktop?
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Zeikuu on April 14, 2011, 01:02:16 PM
Yes but summon rushing ANY boss apart from dullahan is boring, granted Valukar doesn't give you much of a choice due to his moves but doom dragon is easily defeatable without using any Djinn or summons. Just use weapon unleshes from weapons such as Sol Blade, Excalibur, Masamune, tisiphone edge etc..
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)

I usually use that strategy as well. Megido being an massive counter on the damage rate.

But I want a solid strategy for low level characters, so that we don't have to watch the same cutscene 10 times over. Note that apart from myself nobody in the room have ever played the second Golden Sun game so far (and besides Sixty nobody the first as well). So I'm not expecting to reach the boss with your perfect party (full djinns and best equipment) :-X

Will try xsplit later.

I'm now aboard the Ship going towards Tolbi. Saved right before the first fight, with precisely 4:00 on the timer. If I can even improve my run I might not get all Djinns and aim for the best possible time. Like a proper speed run :o

For the data transfer I can always prepare a save file with decent characters (in other words semi best equipment, all 28 Djinns and levels around 30)

BTW Matt you ever heard of the retreat glitch in Golden Sun. Apparently if you equip Retreat to one of the shoulder buttons and use it whiles you've run out of pp you can "warp" yourself to remote locations. Most know example being able to warp yourself from the entrance of Mercury lighthouse to the top (skipping Mia entirely). This allows you to play the game with only 3 characters, which gives some funny side effects like being able to equip up to 9 Djinns (which gives access to classes which you shouldn't be able to reach until Golden Sun II).

Ahhh, Okay. Actually hoped you knew more about it, seeming as there isn't much relevant data about it besides the fact on how to skip Mia in Mercury Lighthouse.

I'm sure Da_Cloud can do both with those 3+ Mpbs upload. The rest would probably have to stick with only one.

From my experience with FFRadio, it's much easier to get a nice amount of viewers on justin.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on April 18, 2011, 05:31:46 PM
Not if the only reason is that Justin TV has more users right now.

It doesn't really mater which of the two you'll pick. We use a double screen set-up which you can only view from the actual marathon page, and from that page it doesn't really mater if its Justin or Ustream. Given the fact that most of our own streamers are using Ustream and that the chat on Ustream is way more customizable than the chat on Justin (Ustream is basically just a random IRC room, Justin tv has there rooms heavily limited though).

Justin.tv  chat has that i know of the same capabilities as the Ustream chat.

Let's just say that their chat isn't "fully IRC". However, it can be easily integrated in our home page. We've got four months till the marathon, plenty of time to decide where to stream. Will probably be whereever it's easier for the players.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on April 18, 2011, 10:21:02 PM
Both Justin and Ustream have a normal IRC on the background. But Ustream has kept it like IRC only adding a standard script to each channel for additional features (like being able to remove comments, which in fact only mess up the chat even more ::)) Justin TV on the other hand has implemented a series of scripts with which they are trying to rebuild the IRC chat into there own custom chat. The whole ip instead of channel name doesn't make the whole thing easier to find as well.

I won't mind trying out Justin TV, but its just that most of our streamers are using Ustream and most of our returning viewers are also on Ustream. The first step would be checking if all our streamers can stream through Justin TV. Unless they all can I won't consider switching.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)

Okay, then i suggest we try it out. Cuz its more fun if we have allot of people who watch, and Justin.tv has the most people on it.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on April 19, 2011, 11:03:05 AM
Been checking out Justin TV now, but so far I haven't really found any advantages switching over. If fact I'm only finding more and more disadvantages :o

- Not being able to talk in the chat if you don't have an account. Sorry to say but I doubt everybody is that happy to simply create an account in order to be able to talk.

- Heavier resources. I've always watched tebian's show through ustream as Justin tv always lagged like hell for me.

- In order to get people to find your stream among the 30+ pages of game related streams you'll need to advertise the stream yourself anyway. And when advertising you'll probably going to direct them to our own made page (witch holds both streams and the chat) so at that point it doesn't really mater through which you stream.

Sixty have you really considered this through or did you came up with the idea after Tebian told you he has more viewers on Justin than on Ustream?
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Chaos on April 19, 2011, 11:24:12 AM
Ustream has a few rooms with hundreds of viewers while the other rooms barely have any people. It also seems like most ustreamers are Japanese people these days. When they join an English channel, they leave the next second.

Justin seemed more friendly to less popular people, even though there's also a huge difference in the viewer count between different rooms (kinda similar to ustream).

I thought we'd have better luck attracting viewers on justin, but it seems the cons outweigh the pros.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Da_Cloud on April 19, 2011, 11:51:26 AM
Well yea if the only pro to Justin is that we have a chance of gaining a few extra "random" viewers I don't think it will be wise to switch.

I mean eventually its all about how many people we can gather ourselves. I remember ASephiroth advertising on youtube during the first marathon, which brought in quite a lot of people. Eventually it are things like that which will make the difference.

Our embedded chat room is still working fine. When I first try to speak it says that I have to be logged in, but when I then set the chat to non moderated I can speak just fine as ustreamer.

Okay I've seen the new chat on ustream now so I get what you mean. Must say from all there changes this is the worst (and looking at there forum I'm not the only one thinking that way).

Must say that its only the Ustream chat client which is affected by this. Matt already came with the idea to place our own IRC Client as backup feature for those who had trouble entering the ustream chat. So in general speaking it doesn't really affect our own set-up that much.

Update:

Okay the marathon page is ready now. This year I'm not going to let me get surprised by Dutch donate pages or buggy ustream chats. Took me some work but right now we've got:
- A double screen setup. 1 main feed and the other will be probably be used to set up an commentary feed.
- A double chat set up. Both the original ustream embed along with an online irc client. You can switch between the chats through an tab on the top. Both are linked in through an iframe with means the feeds themselves won't be interrupted.
- A working donate widget. I've been having trouble with widgets like chipin as they overwrite the language the moment they see the paypal account is from the Netherlands. Not any more. By utilising paypal's features I've build my own widget, which should work the way I want it to.

To do list:
- creating feature to open given chat full screen in new window.
- creating refresh button which only refreshes the streams.
- creating a full FAQ for both chat and donate widget (might just rip the basis from an other site :P)

Also Sixty, I've asked my parents and they are gone during the first week of august. The only problem is that my sister is still at home and she'll be working full time during the summer. My little brother is also at home, but I doubt he'll mind.

In other words I'm 99% sure we can hold it at my place. All we need to do is keep it quite when my sister has to work the next day. I thought if we start at Thursday this means we'll have to be quite the first evening. During the weekend she'll probably be hanging around by her boyfriend anyway ;D

Right i can now stream directly from xsplit perfectly, just if i don't change what dimensions the dazzle displays naturally (not the program) then i get scan lines when trying to stream in 16:9.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ7y55APWMI This was a test i just did, you can see the scan lines on this.

I might be able to participate in the livestream with a timeslot of 1.5 hours. I just did a test run of Crash Bandicoot: Warped, skipping all the cutscenes and excluding the ending in 72 minutes (Crystals and Bosses only), so if some gap needs to be filled, I might be able to do it with this. Though I would need to try out if I can stream it correctly because Manycam requires too much frameskip to be watchable and not lag on my end. Xsplit didn't start up last time so I'm gonna try that again soon and if that works, I can stream PSX games. Otherwise I might just stream a random GBA or NES game that I can complete rather quickly :P. Just count on me being in the stream for a limited timezone as I'm not too good with playing a game for more than 2 or 3 hours :P

That can be arranged Ergunno. Any particular times during which you want to stream, morning, middday, midnight?

Also Matt how long do you want your timeslot to be. That way I can roughly fill you in ;D

Sorry about the schedules delay. But we've got quite a lot of European people, so I've got to try and see how we can arrange them. Yuichan as things are looking now it will be an night stream for you, that is unless we can get somebody from the USA who want to help filling up an gab of appropriately 8 hours.
Title: Re: FFTogethers Summer Marathon (2011)
Post by: Ergunno on May 04, 2011, 06:34:45 PM
I'll help in the midnight stream. It'd be no problem for me to go midnight. I can fill a midnight gap. I might do multiple games to fill in 5 hours or so? Though it all depends on the exact date of this and if my mom is home or not :|. I'll probably be able to stream it though. I still first need to find a streaming set-up that works >_>. XSplit won't load for me, it's stuck when I try to turn it on. Manycam needs too much frameskip for me to be able to play decently but the output is horrendous.
If I can't make it work, then I'll just do some other games because I can stream GBA, SNES and such games no problem. I'll see. Just count on the fact that I will be able to stream for at least 2 hours. Schedule me in at night though.

Any word on when FFVI is going to surface on the US PSN. I'm waiting for that before i do any more practice runs as NTSC + HDD will be faster and more responsive than my PAL disc. I Could get it from the UK PSN but i'd rather wait for NTSC.

I want to know whatever happened to it, it was meant to come out on US PSN during the time section of the outage but then never came whereas the EU got it. I'd rather it come out on the US PSN as that means free game for me >_>

well, for once, nothing has come up yet to take me out.
Are you expecting something to come up, or is it only the unexpected (broken pc, illness, ect.) which can possible stop you? Both aren't really a big deal, but if its the first I will need to calculate a backup plan beforehand ;)

i'm still hoping to be hired somewhere, but it's late enough into the summer that i don't see that as any more likely than broken PC/ illness

i was more refering to the fact that i had to drop out of the last 2 marathons due to unexpected summer trip and surgery XD

but yeah nothing i think is likely to put me out this time

I'm talking about the 3 days straight me and Sixty have planned. We assumed our friends would come over to my house to help us out, which would give us like 5/6 people. Since its starting to get close we need to get confirmations whether or not our friends can help out. you should put me back in the unconfirmed status for now, while my brother has been home this week our router disconects and resets multiple times a day, we're looking into why, but i bet it's because it doesn't like running internet to 7 different items (5 computers, wii and PS3)

if he leaves and it works fine i was right and i won't be able to take part since my bro will be here during the marathon, but if it doesn't then it's something else and we can try to fix it before the marathon :P

Yuichan is probably playing for 16 hours I believe, remember something like that. But at least Matt should be able to get enough sleep whiles Yuichan is playing ;D

Well depending on when Yuichan actually finishes in my time i should be alright for letting jake stream and i can take ergunno's 4 hours. Gives me more time to actually make sure i get my game done. When will my time actually start WITH Ergunno's time added on and what's going to happen to SG's timeslot if he isn't doing it.

Okay duo to unforeseen problems from Shadow I've had to make a new schedule. So if you can please reconfirm your times.

Matt I can't remember when your parent went away, but if needed I can shift the whole schedule 1 day up. Though I rather not as this would cause some additional trouble for my sister.

Hmm so 1pm to 3am, I can do that and jake should be able to do his fine. Jake did say to me he'd take around 9-10 hours so if we have jake's finish time at 5am GMT then if we do get somebody like say possibly andrew who wants to do something then we've got a time setup for them. I Guess we should get to advertising, Somebody should go make a promotional video. :P

Not sure, the popular charity of choice for gaming marathons is childs play. Also since we all know how to stream to both ustream and Justin.tv which host are we going to use. Justin.tv gets more viewers but ustream has better chat moderation options. My main Problem with last year was how throughout ALL of ustream last year for my segment i only had a few viewers who kept dropping in and out.

Jake will be truly confirmed when he tells me he's up for doing his all nighter which shouldn't be a problem, i'll be the one with more of a problem staying awake than him :P.

Charity: I think Blitzys idea of Child's play is a solid idea. Its popular, its good, so why not?

Everybody upload it as well as mass share it, don't forget to advertise the marathon on some sites. I'll do it on TSG's forum in their stream section and i'm sure Jacob will back me up there.

we just kinda do whatever for fun.

With a bit of training I can probably do FFX within 18 hours.

The knowledge to do all mainstream games is there and I really hope we'll be able to do such a thing at some point. Though right now we'll still  lack the amount of players.

I don't think he mind doing that. Though most subscribers on youtube won't look up or down though, they only subscribe in the hope to get a subscription back :-\

Hello all, I'm new here, but I'm a friend of Matt and Martin's and I've been talking about helping out with this marathon. I've been talking about doing KH1(I could do Final Mix, that's your choice) and I would do it I think Matt said after everyone else. But yeah. I hope to hear from y'all! I have good internet and I could host whenever I play. Get back to me!  :D

Also made a quick draft for the promotional video. After watching it online I still need to adjust a few minor things (making some of the text appear longer on screen). Also it seems I forgot to include Yuichan's game :-X

Okay I've setted up an chipin widget. Child's play already has an paypal account for these things and its always better to donate directly than using a storage account.

Now the only real question remains is whether it will be ustream or justin where going to use ::)
Will also open up the marathon board for the participants when I've got the time, the needed information like the passwords for the accounts will be stored there ;)

Will give it a serious try when I've got access to some stable internet. Being 2 storages above the internet access point does give me a rather weak signal to begin with.

Well me, jake martin and fury can use either due to xsplit which i need to make sure i buy before it leaves beta.

I've asked Jacob to advertise the forum on TSG instead of me as he'll have more of an impact and more success than me or anybody else.

Simplified Schedule:
Da_Cloud & Crew - FFIX/Golden Sun 1 & 2 - Thursday, 4th [16:00] GMT
xShadowBlitzx - FFVI - Sunday, 7th [12:00] GMT
Yuichan - FFV Advance - Monday, 8th [02:00] GMT
Jake1456 - Kingdom Hearts 2 - Monday, 8th [18:00] GMT
FuryRising - Kingdom Hearts(Possibly Final Mix) - Tuesday, 9th [04:00] GMT

You can access JustinTv through mIRC, but its a bit more of a work around. JustinTv has uses a series of loose chat servers. To access it with mIRC you must know the IP address of that server and fill it in as the server.

If you go to our special marathon page you can find the data you'll need to fill in.

I've gone onto both channels and disabled the "redirect" option so i assume if you go to the main site it still redirects you to another site which then causes your chat not to work?

well after you did it for me yesterday ( thankyou matty) I no longer get redirected ..

I can see the game and hear the sounds. then over on the right I click to sign into justin tv to chat ..then it just has a whirly thing that just doesnt ever stop..I can seethe link underneath to other stuff and I can click on chat preferences like colour etc ..I can click on "hide chat" but nothing else

If I click on the viewer/chat list nothing happens ,so I cannot see who is there either.

I can't get it to work either.... :-[ Nothing will load from our marathon page. One of my problems is the justintv sign in thing. I sign in and type the letters and hit return and it resets the sign in screen, won't sign me in. I tried joining the chat from my IRC program, but I have to sign in and can't get around it. I tried a couple of different browsers. I guess my computer is just too old, won't load it.

Are you sure you're putting in the right info? Type your username and password, click "Sign In". That should be all. As for joining through mIRC, you have to type your justin.tv username and password before attempting to join. Go to Options > Connect > Servers and type your jtv password into that field. Should be similar with other IRC clients.

Thanks all who attended. I had a great time playing my game, what with the fail and all. It was a good time and I hope to participate in future marathons!
