Title: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Da_Cloud on February 02, 2013, 01:31:26 PM
Okay I'll think you guys know the drill by now. As every year, this year we'll also be trying to hold hour annual marathon event. This year being slightly different as its our 5 year anniversary as well, so lets try to make it a party we won't forget ;D

First lets get going with the people who would be interesting to help out. The games you guys are interested (maybe even a common theme). And so on.

The dates aren't set yet, but they will be around the summer holiday again. I'll just have to figure out the best working dates for us all. (which will probably be a date where my or sixty's house is parents free :P

My personal goal would be to have an even better opening than last year. The 3 tier semi blind speedrun was quite a lot of fun to do and for as far as I picked it up also fun to watch, so lets try to get one this year as well ;)

I'll be streaming. I'll get a slight upload speed boost in one of the following months, so there shouldn't be any quality/lag issues. However, I have no idea what to stream. All the games I can think of that would fit the theme (JRPGs and some other Japanese games) are way too long to do in one sitting. Maybe I could cut it in parts.

I believe that this year we where trying to get pretty much all streamers in 1 house if possible. I suggest to stream Final Fantasy games this year. We are FFTogether after all, so maybe that FF7 complete again, or just start at FF 1 and take them all.

So in my opinion the theme would be Final Fantasy. What do you guys think?

I'd take FFXII in that case. I've played a few others, but this one would probably be the easiest for me.

so i assume that it would be possible for you to come to the Netherlands?

Heh, I wish.

I'll stream from my home. Or perhaps you could come to Bosnia. :P

Sixty wouldn't step 1 be to find a spot for such thing. Because that alone is already a though thing to do. Considering we are a group with young people (risk factor), don't have a huge budget and we'll need specific facilities including a strong internet connection. Unless your parents are fine with strangers camping in your house I'd say this will be the first step ::)
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013

Every summer there are strangers in my parents house, and i haven't heard them complain yet ;D
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Da_Cloud on February 05, 2013, 09:59:13 AM
Sixty it seems both my parents and my sister are gone on the same week. Have to figure out which week that is exactly, but that could also be our cue ;D

Also for the race, might Dirge of Cerberus be a good candidate ??
Don't know the race factor in the game, but seeming how it could be done in 1 go. And I figure most of us (those who are probably going to stream) have at least played the game.

Its either that or FFXII I guess. As the rest of the games would be to long for what will basically become a blind speedrun.

And on a second note, do we allow ourselves to train beforehand or will we go "blind" again.

I'll try to get Yuichan involved. I would love to hear from him again.

I can't play, or stream, but I'd love to just hang out with you guys, even if it's only the Dutch part of the Family.
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Sixty on February 05, 2013, 11:04:14 AM
Well if we are going to do DoC then i can stream it after i finished ni no kuni xD. i don't mind doing it blind, its been a while since i played it so it would be fun. And i know how you guys love to see me fail xD.

btw just thought of something, if we are gonna stream from 1 location and doing that speedrun with 3 or more how are we going to stream? we need at least 2 till 3 pc's. if we hook up the dazzle's maybe?

Don't get your hopes up about everybody managing to get together. And apart from that my pc could easily handle 2 dazzle inputs in xSplit, so I doubt it would form a huge problem ::)

I would almost turn the question around and ask if you living room would be able to handle the amount of equipment we'll be going to use this year ::) Because given the number of equipment from our last marathons, the number of equipment has been constantly increasing :P

We are FFTogether after all, so maybe that FF7 complete again
This isn't workable anymore, compaired with back when we did this the copyright detection software has taken a huge leap forward. And the last thing you want is getting a ban for streaming videos. And it wouldn't be a complete picture without those :-\

I personally prefer FFXII over DoC. And I think a blind run would be more fun.

Well somethings tells me that if we are going to do FFXII, we should have Jacob as our 3th runner ::)
And blind, guess I'll have to repair that deathcounter then. As I'm sure we'll be going to need it ::)

oh my living room can handle it, we only have to change the position of the couch a bit.

Its more them not being able to come here than your room being to small, though the later would also serve a problem ::)

I mean rsslayersr might be able to come and in a rare cause even Yuichan might be able to make the trip. But for the rest I don't see many more being able to come all the way.

I'll try to get Yuichan involved. I would love to hear from him again.
Would be a good idea. If not I'll just send him an hint on skype :P Might be an good idea to do that with Matt as well, seeming how he doesn't come online that much resently ::)

Well provided I'm able I'll be down for doing Dirge of Cerberus myself as i know i can do that in one sitting guaranteed. I don't want to pass out again this year. Me coming over there to the house is a possibility too, just to let you know. It's not IMPOSSIBLE but it wouldn't go down easy as well of course.

Else I'll have to start preparing stuff at my house which means no "strangers".

Hmm. I'm interested. Not in person, obviously, being the new guy, and intercontinental travel isn't exactly possible for me :P
However, if there's a way to not-just-observe? I've been intrigued with doing something like a Let's Play kinda deal. My recording/streaming capability needs to be tested, though. I'm just not sure that pointing my webcam at the tv is the best way lol. And also, my collection of pre-X FFs are all emulator. Except DoC, that's on disc (Also can't remember a *Bleep* thing about the game other than Vincent :x). And XIII may or may not be playable by then (not sure I'd even want to, anyways...) depending on if I get a new 2nd gen system or not. My 360 RRoD'd before Christmas.

What say?

I really doubt that pointing a webcam at your TV is a good idea. You should try playing some games on the emulator and streaming that. That's exactly what I am gonna do.

Yeah that was said with a lot of sarcasm lol :) That essentially leaves FFs 1-9 and Tactics for me. 7-9 would probably be a bit long for a marathon playthrough and I can't remember how long Tactics took. Or much of anything about it, come to think of it. Suggestions? BTW, all the titles are PSx versions, ie Origins, Chronicles, Anthology, etc.

Depence on how fast you can play them :P Seen people do FFIX in under 10 hours as single playthrough, though I guess that's a bit to much for the likes of us.
If your experienced with the likes of FFI-FFVI you should be able to easily do it in one go though. Don't know about Tactics, but my personal experience would say its to long for a single run. But then again the "tactics" series aren't my strongest points :P
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Fehlany on March 04, 2013, 02:31:53 PM
Yeah, mine either. That's why I don't remember it very well lol. I know I can run through 1-6 in short order, especially the rereleases I have on emulator. Too bad I can't stream from my kid's 3DS, streaming my third playthrough of 4 for the perfect game (minus the farming, of course, so the complete game side of it, anyways) would be pretty sexy, imo.

EDIT: Downloaded Xsplit and registered to Twitch.tv. I'll be experimenting with them later. Might start a topic on it if I feel the need, too.

An idea is to do more streaming sessions. You could do three 8 hour sessions. That would give you 24 hours to complete the game. We could also try playing together some game by exchanging save files.

The first idea could significantly increase the duration of our marathon.

Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Chaos on March 04, 2013, 09:55:49 PM
We choose a game that we both can play on emulator. We do it in shifts. For example, you start playing for 8 hours, then send your save file to me and I play for 8 hours while you get some rest. After that I send my save file to you and so on. This allows us to play some of the longer games.

Personally I wouldn't want to do more than one 8 hours shift in such a short period of time. If we wanted to go for 24+ hours, we'd need a third person.

Don't use XSplit. Get Open Broadcaster Software (http://obsproject.com/) and use that. It takes way less resources and it's a far better program and it's completely free.

Unfortunately, my upload speed isn't high enough to handle 720p. Not like it matters much. Probably no one would watch it at fullscreen.

Okay as told before Sixty's parents aren't planning to go on a holiday during the summer itself so the date comes down to when my parents are away. My parents are gone most of the time, but last year my sister complaint about me claiming the living room for 3 straight days, so I'd had to make sure she was away as well ;D

Seems that this year we'll be going a bit earlier than last years, but I'm currently going to plan stuff around the week of 22 July. So check your own agenda's and make sure to keep that week free :P

Well the only reason why I wait for them to be gone is so I can claim the living room, which in this case is better than my own room for 2 reasons:
1) I can connect to the internet with a cable instead of relying on wireless (of which the access point is 2 floors away from my room, in other words the max distance within our house).
2) We have more room and better chairs there :P

Do you need more games for the marathon? Because I might be able to stream a game or two, depending on if I can get the recording equipment to work. The games I'm thinking of are Malicious (ps3) and Nanobreaker (ps2), both games are relatively short (about 5-6 hours each). With practice I can propably complete malicious in under 3 hours.

Under 3 hours :O Wow that is pretty fast, personally i still don't understand that game I played it for like 1 hour and got lost in all the firebutton spamming. I just didn't know what the hell to do :P
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: RoachWizard on June 18, 2013, 08:54:02 AM
Yeah, 3 hours is manageable if you know what to do, the biggest problems are going to be Mad Queen Ashelei and the Battleship.

The game doesn't really explain this right away, but there are more weapons to choose from. From the start, you have the shadow bullets and the fists, press down on the d-pad to use the fists. Also, you need to kill smaller enemies to gain aura, which is your most important resource in a fight.

Aura empowers your attacks, heals you and is used to create chain attacks. Holding L1 and pressing the attack buttons uses aura to make your attacks stronger. You can also hold L1 and X to go into aura mode, this uses up your aura over time, but it makes you stronger, and you can use additional aura to make your attacks even stronger. The amount of aura you use per attack depends on the weapon you are using.
Healing yourself is done by holding L1 and O, and costs 400 aura per limb that is lost. So for example, if you've lost both arms and a leg, it will cost 1200 aura to repair your Spirit Vessel.

If there is anything else you want to know, just ask.

P.S.: I recommend going to the Forsaken Library first, it has the easiest boss and the smaller enemies don't really bother you.

So that's how it all works, cause yeah the game just throws you into an allout war and then doesn't explain sh!t. But knowing this maybe i'll give it another shot.

Guess it's time we made the schedule. I'm probably going with CC: FFVII. It should be doable in 8 hours. What about the race? FFXII?
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Da_Cloud on June 27, 2013, 07:09:55 PM
The date would be the week of 29 July as that's the only week I could get free myself (still need to see if we can play at my house which would really increase the amount of time I could play during my split).

Never the less I would most likely go with:
- Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (4 man play)
- Crystal Chronicles: Crystal bearers
Together with probably a major FF title (still not sure which then, also depends on the time).
If RoachWizard is able to join we'll play his games during this time as well, else he'll probably stream it himself.

For the race I'd only go with FFXII if we can get a 3rd player, wouldn't personally like to play it as a 2 man race. For that I'd rather take a shorter game with more action.

Wouldn't want a 2-man race, either. I don't think it should be a problem to find a third player. Zeikuu, wee?

I'm kind of out of practice with speedrunning FFXII, so if you want Sixty you can go ahead and be the third. I'm actually interested in doing KH1 Final Mix. I'm playing the HD version, and my time is around 4 hours right now, but I should be able to get it down to 3h30min by then, maybe. I dunno. But I'd like to play that. xD

I need to know the day I would be playing within two weeks of the marathon however. Otherwise I can't call off work in time.

I haven't practised the game at all and I'd be surprised if Chaos has been practising the run so I wouldn't be concerned about that. Its more a blind man race than a well practised one.

Sixty my house seems to be free during that week, so we can group up at my place and probably take another 3 day stream (dependence on the amount of people we've got together though) ??

Also Jacob bring out the date / time that works out the best for you and I'll can work around it. We can start on the 28th of July (and my personal limit) would be the 2th of August. Others can continue after that date of course, but I self have to rest back up for another week of work :P

Depence if the Dazzle will stream the output of FFXII in a decent way. Because my pc only has 1 real capture card installed and usually the dazzle will start to show bars when playing those kind of games.

Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013

Well the best scenario would be to start of at the 28th with the FFXII "speedrun" part 1. If we do this from 18:00 till 00:00 GMT, then Jacob could take over with KH. Which should if I'm correct would then be till roughly midnight on his own time-zone.

If from that moment another player could fill in another 6-8 hours we could fill in FFXII "speedrun" part 2 after that run and from that point onwards it shouldn't become much of  a trouble to line up the rest.
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013

Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Da_Cloud on July 03, 2013, 09:26:05 AM
Probably 1 or 2 hours sooner, though yea the idea is that we roughly play till midnight. Would give us the opportunity to have at least a good solid meal before the run starts and our midnight would be American evening so its easy for them to pick it up while the three of us can get a rest for part 2.

Sure, which game would you like me to start with, Malicious (the shorter game) or Nanobreaker (the longer one)?
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: Chaos on July 08, 2013, 06:44:58 PM
You will need to fill in 5 hours or more, so that me, Da_Cloud and Sixty can rest a bit (I'd really like at least 10 hours between our FFXII runs).
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: RoachWizard on July 08, 2013, 08:15:11 PM
Ok, then Nanobreaker would be a better option. That game can take about 5 to 6 hours to complete. I could also play Malicious right after that, that should bring the total time to a little less than 10 hours. Though that would leave me without games to fill other possible time gaps, but finding another game or two shouldn't be a big deal.

Done some work to set up the rules for the FFXII run. Don't think they are really surprising, but if you see something let me know :D

Rules FFXII speedrun:

Practical rules:
- Nobody has practices the run before the actuall race.
- During the race your allowed to look up stuff in guides, found both ofline and online.
- Your allowed to use any glitch or trick that can be reach from within the game, any outwards advantages (gameshark, power controllers, ect) aren't allowed.
- The final time will be calculated by adding up the time of the first run to the time of the second run.

Segmented rules:
- Speedrun will be devided into 2 segments. The first being 6 hours long and the second being 8 hours long.
- During the first segment you're not allowed to go any further than the Phon Coast. In other words you are allowed to enter the Phon coast and run though the phon coast itself, but you aren't allowed to advance to futher areas.
- 10 min before the first segment ends your advised to search for a save crystal.
- If for some reason you wish to end the first segment before the 8 hour mark you are allowed to do so. If for example you've reach the Phon coast before the 8 hour mark you can save time to do so.
- If nobody is in range of a "quick" finish by the end of segment 2 the race will end and the positions will be determend on the location you've reached (together with the time you've taken to reach it).

Personal rule:
- Well all run wsplit (little program to track speedrun progress) with a few key points. This way we can track the global time as well as compare a few global marks.

Yea that's the thing. The program is really simple and after 5 min you should know practically how everything works :D

If we then keep track of bosses like Mimic Queen, Judge Ghis, Garuda, Belias, ect we can compare how we played. I remember during the KHII part we all said Matt was closing in on us rapitly, would have loved to know at which parts specifically for example :D

The final version had a 1 hour difference, but the times below should be the final times. We had to fill in the gap so we increased your slot a bit as well (you'll start 1 hour earlier and stop at the original end spot). Don't know how long the exact run takes you, but I guess its easier to fill in half an hour than create one.

28th 17:00 (GMT)  => 3 man FFXII "speedrun" part 1
28th 23:00 (GMT)  => KH by wee187
29th 04:00 (GMT)  => Roachwizard
29th 09:00 (GMT)  => 3 man FFXII "speedrun" part 2
29th 17:00 (GMT)  => Da_Cloud's "2/3 day" shift
...............

After this we can get you another slot Chaos, but the times depend on how many people are going to help me out during the long split. Which right now is still unknown to me.
Title: Re: FFTogethers summer marathon 2013
Post by: wee187 on July 22, 2013, 11:19:37 AM
Yeah that should be fine. I'll most likely finish the game way early, but I can find things to do to take up time afterwards. Maybe I'll just show all the cutscenes instead of skip them or something. I'll see how long it takes me to do a run with cutscenes and if I can finish in that time then I'll do that. Either way it'll work out. :D

We need dependable people though, so just adding plain numbers won't work, and I need to know these people beforehand as I'm not letting (for me) plain strangers into my house ::)

Games aren't the problem, got enough games to keep us going for a month if needed :P

and i am not inviting anyone without your approval, but people i am talking about who might be able to join are also people who you know. So don't worry. ;D

Hey Bram, do you think you could update the fftogether.com/marathon page from TSG's stream to ours? I want to upload a video linking to the marathon sometime later today, and I'd like to link to that page. Also, I assume we're using the FFTogether twitch page that we've used previously, right? I can link that too then.

I'll update it once I'm back home. Probably need to update the twitch pages themselves as well, guessing the information on those pages is probably outdated by now.

But overall we'll be using the twitch accounts (fftogether) as main stream and (fftogether2 & fftogether3) as sub streams.

Also, could you PM me the login info for the twitch page? Or at least the stream key, one of the two. I'll need that. xD

yea its always a shame once its over.

But like I said before we should do more smaller event during the weekends. FFXIV might help with that, but we might come up with other stuff as well ;D

I would like to see some smaller events during weekends or whenever you have free time it might even draw in new people.

Justin probably deleted them by itself as I never deleted any video.

But don't you guys have a wsplit file saved somewhere ?? That's how I got my timers anyway.

A week has passed, they got auto-deleted.

Anyway, I beat Vossler at 5:45 and I beat the Mandragoras at 13:00.

No, since I just closed it after finishing my run. :-\

Just open the file and edit it. On that window it should have saved the "best segmented" times for each segment. These are the times you took between each segment. All you need to do add up those times to get your total time for each segment. Which should result in something like my list :P

Overall I'm quite happy with my times though. Guess all I need was another segment of roughly 7~8 hours to finish the game.

Me neither. Have to figure out what game to play though. The game will also depend on whether or not I have to finish it in a single run.

Which in turn depend on how many others want to join ;D

Would say I log in to Team Speak and ask them, but for some reason people seem to be hooked onto Dark Souls these days ::)

Well both you and Oni have almost reached the magical number of 14 inactive days in FFXIV. So I started to feel lonely there :P

Sooorry too :-[

But I had money counted lately and I prefered to wait until few days to Patch 2.2 to make the most out of it :-\

Tonight I'll renew the subscription (but I have practice tonight sooo yeah).

I can't get online tonight and I doubt Sixty will be able as well (we both have band practice tonight, be it at different bands tough) and tomorrow the servers go down for the patch I believe??

Lets just all try to be on-line after the patch to try out the new dungeons as 4 again like we did with the previous patch. Having no clue what to do in the dungeon was refreshing back then, especially knowing you'll most likely end up massively farming the dungeon anyway ::)

BTW I'll probably should set up a new topic for this :D
