Title: Riddles
Post by: Zodiac Killer 99 on July 26, 2008, 07:16:00 PM
This thread is basically like the FFXII trivia thread but it is not related to FF. I wasn't sure if this should have been put in forum games or off topic so if a moderator wants to move it that is fine obviously. I will start by putting in two riddles. If you want to answer one please put the riddle number and then your answer.

Here is the first riddle:

Three guys stay at a hotel for a week. The bill comes to ?30 so each man pays ?10. A few days later the manager of the hotel notices there's been a mistake and that the room actually only cost ?25 so he gives the bell boy ?5 to split between the three men. The bell boy sees a chance to make some money so he gives each man ?1 back and keeps the remaining ?2 himself. So, each man has paid ?9 for the room because they got ?1 back. This means you have the three ?9 each man paid which is ?27 in total and you have the ?2 the bell boy kept. What happened to the other pound?

Here is the second riddle:

1. There are 5 houses in five different colors.
2. In each house lives a person with a different nationality.
3. These five owners drink a certain drink, smoke a certain band of cigar and keep a certain pet.
4. no owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar nor drink the same drink.

THE QUESTION IS - WHO OWNS THE FISH?

The Britt lives in the red house.
The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
The Dane drinks tea.
The green house is on the left of the white house.
The green house owner drinks coffee.
The person who smokes Paul Mall rears birds.
The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
The man living in the house right in centre drinks milk.
The Norwegian lives in the first house.
The man who smokes blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
The owner who smokes Bluemaster drinks beer.
The German smokes Prince.
The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
The man who smokes Blend has a neighbor who drinks water.

If you're trying to out riddle number 1 focus on the wording. Whoever solves it can post another riddle. If it takes longer than 2 weeks for someone to solve the riddlemaker should give out the answer so the thread does not become inactive. Every 5 days a clue should be given. Good luck! ;D

BTW, Mike (ElliotMajor) cannot answer this riddle because he already knows the answer.

i think the first one is nothing happened
30 - 3 = 27 so each man paid 9 each

the remaining 27 - 25 = 2 that the bellboy kept himself
that was a real play on words

No Vincent, The first letter of the food is in the first sentence and the second letter of the food is in the second sentence.....etc

Notice the words that content the letters are same in the first letter in each sentence ;)

Can i Post a few???

#1:
There is a man lying dead in the middle of a desert with a backpack on.
what happened???

#2:
A woman puts a cup of coffee in a microwave for 2 minutes to heat it up.
after it is done, she turns it on for another 3 seconds. why?

some easy ones:

#3:
A plane crashes on the EXACT border of Canada and the U.S.A.
where do they bury the survivors???

#4:
A rooster lays an egg on the EXACT middle of the top peak of a roof.
Which way does the egg roll?

# 3 and 4 should be done FAST.

#1 and 2 should take some time

# 3 and 4 should be done FAST.

#1 and 2 should take some time

1. It was a jetpack?
2. She's heating up milk to put in?
3. You don't bury survivors
4. Roosters don't lay eggs.

If any of those are right i won't post another cos otherwise some will be forgotten. These are the ones we already have. I know 3 and 4 are right.

One of the three guys have it. Because...

Each boy got a pound back, so that makes 3 pounds. The bellboy kept 2 pounds. The total cost was 25 pounds, and the money that was left was 5 pounds. 3 pounds (boys) + 2 pounds (bellboy) = 5 pounds.

Here is my riddle:

I make computers crash.
I can do your homework.
I make people laugh.
I can destroy the world.
I make time stop.
I can turn a car.
I make people cry.
I can sit still.
I make everyone dance.
I can go invisible.
I make bikes stop.
Can you guess the riddle?

here's kind of an easy one

Samuel was out for a walk when it started to rain. He did not have an umbrella and he wasn't wearing a hat. His clothes were soaked, yet not a single hair on his head got wet. How could this happen?

If it wasn't for a few of those i'd say a computer virus or e-mail but those wouldn't make sense. I guess it could be keys as in both computer keys and car and bike keys? Still don't know about sitting still and dancing though.

my second guess is after you was done heating it up she wanted to make it hotter
Title: Re: Riddles

Hint(s): She didnt open the door in between the two heatings
           it was perfectly heated.

2 minutes is the longest the microwave could heat something at a time and she needed it put on for 2 min 3 seconds to be perfectly heated
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: sageerrant on August 01, 2008, 12:41:44 AM
She wanted to turn the handle of the mug back toward herself because it would be too hot to grab otherwise.

And yes, JudgeBergan, I can guess the riddle:

I make computers crash.
I can do your homework.
I make people laugh.
I can destroy the world.
I make time stop.
I can turn a car.
I make people cry.
I can sit still.
I make everyone dance.
I can go invisible.
I make bikes stop.

And I suppose I could throw in "What am I?" to give it a more explicit riddle format.

Yeah, I nearly killed the Trivia topic with a riddle of my own... I expect this'll spring back to life too, though.

And since I've already made my guess, I'll share the secret.  Look closely at the last line, which says, "Can you guess the riddle?"

"Can you guess the riddle?"

Everyone else was trying to guess the answer and failing, so... I guessed the riddle itself.

I mean, he handed the riddle right to us, so it's pretty easy to guess what it is, as long as you don't try to actually solve it.
Still, it took me a while to realize why the riddle seemed so odd, because I was so caught up in trying to find a common thread.

Try this one

Andy dislikes the catcher. Ed's sister is engaged to the second baseman. The center fielder is taller than the right fielder. Harry and the third baseman live in the same building. Paul and Allen each won $20 from the pitcher at pinochle. Ed and the outfielders play poker during their free time. The pitcher's wife is the third baseman's sister. The pitcher, catcher, and infielders except Allen, Harry, and Andy, are shorter than Sam. Paul, Andy, and the shortstop lost $50 each at the racetrack. Paul, Harry, Bill, and the catcher took a trouncing from the second baseman at pool. Sam is involved in a divorce suit. The catcher and the third baseman each have two children. Ed, Paul, Jerry, the right fielder, and the center fielder are bachelors. The others are married. The shortstop, the third baseman, and Bill each cleaned up $100 betting on the fight. One of the outfielders is either Mike or Andy. Jerry is taller than Bill. Mike is shorter than Bill. Each of them is heavier than the third baseman.

Using these facts, determine the names of the men playing the various positions on the baseball team.

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Zodiac Killer 99 on August 04, 2008, 07:31:44 PM

Title: Re: Riddles

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Zodiac Killer 99 on August 04, 2008, 07:44:14 PM
Yeah he needs to post a clue

Does anyone think i should do a scoreboard for this? So a person who answers a riddle with no clues gets 4 points, 1 clue 3 points, 2 clues 2 points and 3 clues 1 point (there's a maximum of 3 clues cos if a riddle goes on for more than 2 weeks the answer has to be revealed and each clue comes after 4 days) and if someone makes a riddle that no-one gets in two weeks they get 5 points. I would go back to the beginning of the thread and see the scores.

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Zodiac Killer 99 on August 04, 2008, 08:11:22 PM
OK scoreboard is

MK Emaster: 9
JudgeBergan: 8
Zodiac Killer 99: 8
Xkeyblademasterx07: 4
Sageerrant: 3

I gave MK Emaster 5 for his riddle even though he didn't wait 2 weeks before giving the answer.

5 points go to: A riddlemaker if their riddle is not solved in 2 weeks
4 points go to: A correct guess without any hints or clues
3 points go to: A correct guess after 1 hint or clue (after 4 days)
2 points go to: A correct guess after 2 hints or clues (after 8 days)
1 point goes to: A correct guess after 3 hints or clues (after 12 days)

After 14 days the riddlemaker must give out the answer and in doing so will receive 5 points. When a riddle is not solved and the answer is given out after the 14 days the riddlemaker can either make another riddle or ask someone else to make a riddle. After a riddle is either guessed correctly or the answer is given by the riddlemaker the scoreboard should be edited by the correct number of points. The current scoreboard is above.

The current riddles are:

JudgeBergan's riddle:

I make computers crash.
I can do your homework.
I make people laugh.
I can destroy the world.
I make time stop.
I can turn a car.
I make people cry.
I can sit still.
I make everyone dance.
I can go invisible.
I make bikes stop.
Can you guess the riddle?

Zodiac Killer 99's riddle:

As JudgeBergan has already posted a clue or hint if the riddle is guessed it will be worth three points. However, as it has been seven days he must post another clue or hint tomorrow. Then it will be worth 2 points to a riddle solver. I will have to post a clue or hint in three days time.

Well, on a similar line of thought to my previous guess, I suppose I could say, "No, you can't guess a riddle."
But I doubt that's it.

Although I'm still not quite sure of the answer to that riddle... I think I've solved the other:

This is assuming that only the married men have children.  If that's not the case, then... I guess we'll just wait and see.

Judgebergan:

Friction

I make computers crash. - working parts overheat
I can do your homework. - pencil touching on paper
I make people laugh. - fart noises...lol
I can destroy the world. - could be any number of things
I make time stop. - if friction was too strong, nothing could move
I can turn a car. - I don't know what that means
I make people cry. - scraped elbows and such
I can sit still. - object at rest will stay at rest
I make everyone dance. - without it, feet would slide across the floor and everyone will fall
I can go invisible. - you can't see friction
I make bikes stop. - rubber on pavement = friction

not bad for a first guess eh?

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: FFZell on August 12, 2008, 04:28:19 PM
I've got one...pretty easy if you ask me...

"First think of the person who lives in disguise,
Who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies.
Next, tell me what's the last thing to mend,
The middle of middle and end of the end?
And finally give me the sound often heard
During the search for a hard-to-find word.
Now string them together, and answer me this,
Which creature would you be unwilling to kiss."

I'll tell you where it came from if you can answer the riddle.

Last two lines = Spiders are poisonous.

The longest top 40 is
You Can Make Me Dance Sing Or Anything (Even Take The Dog
For A Walk, Mend A Fuse, Fold Away The Ironing Board, Or Any
Other Domestic Shortcomings)
It came in at number 12

The longest song name ever in the top 40 without brackets or anything like that was
I Never Want An Easy Life If Me And He Were Ever To Get
There
Which got number 38

And the longest song title ever was
Regretting what I said to you when you called me at 11:00 on
Friday morning to tell me that 1:00 Friday afternoon you
were gonna leave your office, go downstairs, hail a cab, to
go out to the airport, to catch a plane, to go skiing in the
Alps for two weeks. Not that I wanted to go with you; I
wasn't able to leave town, I'm not a very good skier, I
couldn't expect you to pay my way, but after going out with
you for three years, I don't like surprises. (A musical
apology)

Another long one of course is Mary Poppins
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
But i'm not sure if that came in the top 40 and even if it did it wasn't the longest one.

Brad stared through the dirty soot-smeared window on the 22nd floor of the office tower. Overcome with depression he slid the window open and jumped through it. It was a sheer drop outside the building to the ground. Miraculously after he landed he was completely unhurt. Since there was nothing to cushion his fall or slow his descent, how could he have survived the fall?

1.
Four men were in a boat on the lake. The boat turns over, and all four men sink to the bottom of the lake, yet not a single man got wet! Why?

2. What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, has a bed but never sleeps?

3. Whoever makes it, tells it not. Whoever takes it, knows it not. And whoever knows it wants it not.

4. What gets wetter the more it dries?

Well I found a few funny once on the internet, lets see if you can find the answers ;D

1) A dead man is found in a locked room, hanging from the ceiling 4 ft above the floor. The room is completely empty, except for a puddle of water below him. How did he die?

2) A man was to be sentenced, and the judge told him, "you may make a statement. If it is true, I'll sentence you to four years in prison. If it is false, I'll sentence you to six years in prison." After the man made his statement, the judge decided to let him go free. What did the man say?

3) What is broken every time it's spoken?

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Feratrox on August 21, 2009, 07:26:22 PM
1: a coffin (spelling? a box you put dead people in?)
3: they died cause of dehydration or starvation, cause they've been there for such a long time without water or food. even though one person probably tried to eat the other one (resulting in the second answer: eaten by cannibal), human flesh doesn't have many nutritions in it, so it was like eating dirt.

Title: Re: Riddles

did the cabin fall on top of them, crushing them in the process, but due to the force of the impact, the remains of their bodies where thrusted through the floor of the cabin, so now they were inside of it?

They started a really annoying smiley spree so Exdeath banned them to the void?
They were really old and died a natural death?

Is this something with words with two different meanings? If so, I give up. If not, I'll keep on guessing.
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Shadow Gilgamesh on August 22, 2009, 03:02:51 AM
nope
nope
and nope
not really a double meaning

hint number 2 (because this is getting kind of sad)
the answer lies with the cabin
which means the people didn't kill each other
an avalanche didn't kill them
it wasn't a bear or a puma
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Feratrox on August 22, 2009, 03:55:51 PM
I think that once we know the answer, we'll feel stupid for not guessing it...

The two guys where the pilot and co-pilot of an aircraft, and the plain crashed into the mountain, so the cabin (cockpit) fell down to the side of the mountain? (lol got a list of possible translations of "cabin" on the internetz :D)

YES!!!
Without oxygen, it becomes soot
with too little oxygen it becomes the infamous carbonmono-oxid
and with enough oxigen, it becomes carbondioxid, which is the majority of our sky and gives us warmth with the greenhouse effect.

anyone can go next.

that riddle didn't make sense to me
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: FFZell on August 31, 2009, 10:10:40 PM
no, I solved it....

"I am hot and Cold
Some one could be very passionate or very aloof.
Of Stone and Ice
One's heart can be hard a stone and cold as ice (meaning you are not easy to get along with) but you still have a heart, feeling.
I am the source of life
your heart pumps blood, helping you live.
Yet, I bring death
You can die of heart attacks, heart failure, broken heart.
Turned to glass
Turned to a shadow

I didn't much get this
I am the one to make you suffer
I know this from experience right now...you can be in a lot of pain when your heart is broken
And I am the one to make you happy
Happiness is always associated with the heart.
To everyone I stick
To death and beyond

Your heart is always around, people can always remember it.

It wasn't that hard to figure out....

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: FFZell on September 03, 2009, 03:03:08 AM
"I stretch across the Horizon
Time is everywhere (the third dimension)
Bind down the earth
Yet I am uncatchable
No one can actually catch time.
For you, for him, for Gods as well
We cannot escape time. It affects everything.
No one has ever seen me
Time is not visible
No one has ever touched me
Time is not tangible
And yet, you struggle to escape my grasp
Again, try as we might we cannot escape time
No end, no beginning
Time is infinite
I am always and never at once
For I am watching over all things"
Time itself last forever, so it is present over all things.

My Riddle explanation:

Solved Riddle

I am always fluctuating, yet I remain stable
Currency values always change (think economics), but it is an integral part in the foundation of society.
Everyone uses me, but most don't have me
Nohing is free, so everyone uses a form of currency, but most people complain how they don't have enough.
I am infinite in all aspects, but I have been brought down to nothing
Currency is limitless, but it's value can be depreciated, like the global depression.
what am I?
I chose currency because it was a broader term than money.

Hint:

I am almost always tangible, but my form is different to many people
Currency almost always has a physical form (the US dollar, the Euro, the Frank, the denarii. Almost always because there is the electronic form of currency.)

2nd Hint:

The world revolves around my many different forms.
Currency makes the world go round.
Some people see me everyday, some almost never see me.
People who coin currency see it everyday, people in somalia can live their lives without seeing it.
I clink, I rattle, I shuffle, I deal.
Again, talking about different forms of currency
What am I.
Currency

3rd Hint:

I am between the 3 and the 25
This code is an alphanumeric code.  The 3rd letter of the alphabet is C, the 25th letter is Y.  The answer is Currency.

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Zodiac Killer 99 on September 04, 2009, 08:08:41 PM
Probably horribly wrong, but heaven/paradise/Nirvana?

It makes you strong, And also weak,
It can make you strong in that you strive to get there, but weak as you may be upset when a friend goes there.
Binds you, free's you, gives you wings
You can not go back to life, but it frees you of your sins. I'm guessing the wings refers to wings of an angel if this is correct.
And yet a prison of the mind I am,
If you want to go there, you must only do good, and must sometimes not do as your mind says.
Force you to die, force you to live
In the case of Nirvana, and I'm guessing it could be applied to the others, you must lead a life without sin to get there, and this is not possible in the first life, so you need to die and live to get there.
I am the Kings greatest servant
It is sometimes believed that such a place is different for everybody dependent on what they wish to be there, and so it could be thought of as a servant. <--- This is the main reason I suspect I am wrong
Much sought after, a blessing
Everyone wants to go there.
False of nature, and I will kill you
No idea. The other reason I think I'm wrong.
I am supreme, greater than god
Heaven is god and all of his servants, and therefore greater than him himself
And yet, even the weakest of the weak
Will control, will command me

Anyone can get there if they lead a good life, and therefore even the weak can control it.

Is it faith?

It makes you strong, And also weak,
Binds you, free's you, gives you wings
Faith gives you something to believe in, but then binds you with a set of rules.
And yet a prison of the mind I am,
It isn't a physical thing, it only exists in your head
Force you to die, force you to live
People die for what they believe in or fight to survive because of what they believe
I am the Kings greatest servant
People having faith in you gives you power
Much sought after, a blessing
Everyone wants to find something to believe in and live for and its a blessing to have that
False of nature, and I will kill you
If you have faith in something, or someone, and are wrong, you could die. (Like if you believed you could fly)
I am supreme, greater than god
Faith dictates the existence of gods. Are Roman gods powerful or terrifying? No, because we don't believe in them
And yet, even the weakest of the weak
Will control, will command me"

When people are at their weakest and neediest, faith is one of the few things they have left

Seems kind of a waste to go into all this detail if I'm wrong though

Fear?

"I lurk in darkness and in light,
Not Sure
in everyone, in everything, at all times
Fear is in everyone at all times, will not all but mostly
My face hidden, my shape hidden,
Fear got no shape nor face
I am without body and yet I can be anything
Fear can be anything, True
Not death I seek, not life I claim
Not sure
But to the living, I am the greatest enemy
Enemy of Life itself
I am a threat to mind, to body and to soul
obvious
A danger to you, to him, to everyone
obvious
You know me by name, you know me since ages
obvious
You know as if I were your brother and parent
obvious
And yet, I am different from all of you"
Fear is a feeling not a being.

Hope thats make sense.

I see it as 2 different things, because a fire has more then 1 flame. it has multiple flames and that makes it a fire. Thats how is see it.

Four friends are in a dark and foggy forest and they reach an unstable bridge. A maximum of two people may cross the bridge so it doesn't break, but whoever crosses it will need a lamp (it's a damaged bridge). They have only one lamp. They also walk at different speeds, so the faster guy will need to slow down to match the speed of the slower guy. Here's the time each one of them needs to cross the bridge:

Person A - 1 minute
Person B - 2 minutes
Person C - 5 minutes
Person D - 10 minutes

What's the minimum amount of time they can cross the bridge in? How do they do it?
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Yuichan on May 17, 2011, 12:54:30 PM
so the lamp must be on the bridge when people pass over, do i get that right?

EDIT: i think i got it.

Lowest time is 17 minutes:

First: A and B cross over with the lamp, 2 minutes
Second: A returns with the lamp, 3 minutes
Third: C and D cross over with the lamp, 13 minutes
Fourth: B returns with the lamp, 15 minutes
Fifth: A and B cross over again, 17 minutes.

You are playing a game with your friend. There are 20 coins on the table. You can take  1, 2 or 3 coins at a time.
A = you, B = your friend.

The winner is the one who takes the last coin.

How can you maximize your chances of winning?

One farmer had 19 cows and three sons. Before he passed away, he told his sons: "Don't fight over the cows when I pass away. The eldest one should take half of them, the second one a fourth and the youngest a fifth." The sons promised they'd do as they were told. However, after their father's death, they didn't manage to split his fortune like they were told. However, one day a neighbor came and helped them split their father's fortune. How did he do it?
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: MegaFun on May 17, 2011, 05:10:55 PM
Did the neighbor bring them one more cow? Because if nineteen is divided by all of those fractions all of the results are not whole numbers and therefore it wouldn't be possible. However if they were to hypothetically 'have' 20 cows it could be divided into 10, 4 and 5, which means that they get the 19 cows they had in the first place and the neighbor keeps his cow. @_@

Correct. Didn't think it was this easy. :-X

Some friends were talking. One of them started telling a true story: A man was sleeping on a bench in a park and he was dreaming that he was a medieval knight fighting for his princess. The moment he was hit by the enemy's lance, a man who was passing by hit him with the tip of his umbrella in order to wake him up. The sleeping man, thinking it was a lance, got a heart attack and died. One of the other friends said that it isn't a true story. Why?

Title: Re: Riddles

does a set of all sets contain itself?
Isn't that something like a paradox >_>

Because if a set of all sets must include itself than it becomes a set which must be included within the set of all sets.
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: jake1456 on May 19, 2011, 03:00:32 PM
i would say that it depends on if there is a black hole in there
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: MegaFun on May 19, 2011, 03:22:02 PM
I don't think a set of all sets includes itself. I think of it as something like the universe where it is a collective representative of all sets, but it is in itself one set. One very large set which encompasses every set in existence, but it is an individual set and therefore does not include itself in the rule of 'all sets'. Of course one could say that "a set of all sets" is really simply another way to say "all sets in existence", so they could very well be identical :o

However this is something that can be seen from different perspectives, such as mine and what Da_Cloud just said, so there's not really a definitive answer and it is in a way a paradox #_# It's like the beliefs Pantheism and Panentheism, where the former believes that "everything is God" while the latter believes that "God is in everything".

That is a very thought provoking question :3

Kinda long, but well.. Here it goes!

They say I am of many colours, but they speak of me all differ in numbers and colours,
I come when light shines, but not only because of her,
I vanish when darkness approaches, but it isn't the only reason I won't always be around,
You sometimes find me near the cascades with my twin,
And if you find me alone away from the cascades, you will rarely find me with my twin,
They say that you will find neither end or beginning of me, and I am sometimes a symbol of hope,
What am I?

CONSTELLATIONS! They usually have myths and legends behind them. The references could include Crux (cross, although I don't know if it's used for guidance), Corona Borealis/Australis (northern/southern crown), Virgo (fair maiden), etc.

And I suppose 88 kind of gave it away. At first I could see the reference to stars and I know some constellations have been obsolete and along researching for constellation names I discovered the total number that exists today, which is 88.

So, am I right? :3

EDIT: Oh, and I believe some are only visible at certain times of the year, which makes sense for the first added pair of lines.
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: KainCrow on May 22, 2011, 01:20:10 PM
Yep! Right! BTW, 3rd line was referring to the Southern Cross, Jesus's birth and arrival of the sages from the East. Answer has nothing to do with the Bible. I am not giving any more lines, though. I solved with 8 more lines, though... At the end of this riddle which is 10th more lines (yeah, there is total 20 line of additions, 2 lines each at once, though it seems no one generally goes until there which I am too lazy to type all), there's direct referrence to Zodiac, too..

This is either very vague or very easy. Here be the next riddle:

I come without being noticed, and leave without being realized.
I hide within everyone, taking over whenever their guard is down,
but most do not realize this until I let them go.
Sometimes I am remembered, but most of the time I am forgotten.
I am tricky and bizarre, capricious and mischievous.
I can be evil, but I can also be good.
Most people let me toy with them, but some are aware of me.
If you can conquer me, I will promise you everything you have ever wanted,
though it is for but a fleeting moment.
What am I?

...Just make one up, Yiazmat.. Here we go...

I can break up friendship, but sometimes make it stronger,
I can break up family, and it may result in tears,
I may help others, for I am neither good nor evil,
But beware of me, for I am very easily made, just like how easy the trust is broken.

Some always lives with my presence, for I am what they are made of,
Some despices me, for I am dishonesty,
Sometimes you can see me with your eyes, hear me with your ears,
But I am most importantly within your mind, your mind playing tricks.

Many believes I am evil, but I exist in almost everywhere,
To see what you are not, but what you tends to be,
Don't forget that I can break your mind, if I become too grand.

A mother bought 5 apples for each of her children and brought them home in a small basket. After giving each of her 5 children an apple, there was still one apple in the basket. How?

Just a couple for anyone who's interested:

Which cities do you get from the following elements?

1) Sulfur, carbon, rhenium & uranium
2) Tungsten, molybdenum, oxygen & scandium
3) Hydrogen, tellurium, nitrogen & radium

What was the logic behind it anyway? I see you've been taking the first few letters of every element, but it's tough to solve.

Time to disturb the dead...

In a faraway land there is a prison with 100 inmates. The wicked warden is plotting a conspiracy to reduce the number of prisoners: Each prisoner will get a number from 1 to 100, he will enter a room with 100 drawers numbered from 1 to 100, and in each drawer a note numbered from 1 to 100. The prisoner can open 50 drawers, and if he finds his number in one of them, he will be saved from death, if not he will be executed.

You begged the warden to spare the prisoners, but he refused. However, he allowed you to talk to all of the prisoners and give them a strategy for picking the drawers. He also allowed you to enter the room before the whole process starts and exchange at most one pair of notes in the drawers (note that you must speak to the prisoners before entering the room). All drawers are closed when a prisoner enters.

What will you tell the prisoners? How many can you save?

Explanation?
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: jake1456 on August 14, 2013, 12:18:07 PM
since 50 drawers can be opened there will be a 50% chance to find their number

How many can you save for sure? No randomness.

I could think of a way to at least save 98 of the prisoners. The first prisoner should open 50 drawers with the numbers 1 to 50. With luck, this guy finds his own number. If not, we have a single prisoner gone.

Before he entered the room, I told him to take all the notes he gathered from the drawers, and put them back into a single one, drawer number one.

I'll tell the next prisoner to check drawer 1. There is a chance he will find his number in there. If not, he can still open another 49 drawers. There is a chance he won't survive this test either. Luckely, I told him to leave drawer number 100 alone and put the 49 gathered notes in drawer 1.

I'll tell the next prisoner to check drawer 1 and 100 and get the contents of drawer 100 in in the first one.

I'll tell the next 97 prisoners to check drawer 1, which will surely contain their numbers.
