Honestly the First 2 Zelda games were probably the hardest games I've played.

tl;dr: Crash bandicoot is hard.

One day, on a blue moon, my brother and I were playing crash bandicoot 1. We'd never gotten past the second island, but there was something different in the air. A wind of change swept over us and we beat the game that night, defeating cortex in his airship. However, there was something we wern't quite satisfied about. The room with the gem steps that appeared for each gem you collected was taunting us. We could see down the long corridors and an endless set of spaces for the gems.

We vowed to collect them all.

Each stage was a challenge, collecting every crate, including nitro and TNT and completing each bonus stage, and reaching the end of the stage without dying wasthe greatest feat we put ourself through, but we didn't make it. The blue moon past and the weekend was over, and another week of school came back to wash us away.

However, due to our skills in astronomy we realised that all the planets would be aligned soon, aka we'd have a school holiday, and this was our one chance to beat this game once and for all. In the last week of the term we asked each other randomly if we were ready to do this, if one of us would back out, but neither of us faltered and the plan was set into motion the following saturday.

Each day we set out to complete the stages, starting from the first island, we completed it in the first 4 days, then the second we partialy completed, before deciding we needed some variety and started mixing the third island in aswell. Every day we'd walk across the gem steps to see if we could get further, and once, it actually turned on a right angle, so we couldn't see what was at the end. After more gem collecting later it went back to a long straight corridor, but the end was in sight.

Sadly, this story dosn't end too well and we didn't manage to complete the game 100%. Cortex's island had the most punishing stages we'd ever played normaly, yet giving us the challenge of completing everything without death was a near impossible feat. about 15 or so gems from the end, we couldn't make it, and kept trying to jump to the end in our dispair. We then put the game down for years in frustration and bordem but are still curious as to what lays beyond the gem road.

That was one hell of a game, I must agree, very hard.

Though, I recently played Battle Toads/Fighting Frogs/Combat Amphibians on my friend's NES and we found that to be quite the challenge, then came the unwinnable stage and we put it down xD

Battletoads
I was wondering if this would pop up. I haven't played it, but from what I've heard about it he's absolutely right.

As for me, Star Fox on SNES. It's the only SNES game I owned that I could never get good at, for some reason.

One of the hardest for me was indeed Final Fantasy Tactics.

Today it's fairly easy mode, after playing it for 9 years, but when I first got it at age 8, it was an unbelievable beast of a game =p

I shall forever wait for the dreams that will never come true

For RPG's I would say The 7th Saga, that game was very unforgivably difficult.  Other games that were difficult, I'd say;

Myth: The Fallen Lords for PC/Mac  it was the learning curve that was rough.

Super Mario 2/Lost Levels.

Wing Commander 1 - Secret Missions 2.

Solstice and Equinox the controls took forever to get used to.

The Immortal - The barrel ride was a nightmare.

The Zork series, as well as "The Pawn" these were text based games that really tested your brain.

That is all I Can think of currently, but I know there are more that tested my skills over the years, but I just woke up so...

Oh, without any doubt, the hardest game in existence of the world is Dragon's Lair for the NES. I never got past the 2nd screen. It's just impossible. You lose all your lives, you start the game all over again and barring I never got past the 2nd SCREEN after playing for hours so I got fed up with it.
Another incredibly hard game was (and still is) Double Dragon 3. I can't believe how much harder they could make a game than Double Dragon 1 and 2...
