Bringing back some activity to the forum?
« on: May 23, 2013, 09:39:52 PM »
Hey everyone.

I could write down a long story here, but I think I rather keep is somewhat short and simple. As we might have all notice the forum is slowly losing its activity during the recent years and I'm somewhat creating this topic to see if you have any ideas on brining back some of it. Be it an in the form of an forum update/reshuffle, some features that you feel are absolutely lacking on the site or just a reason why you think people don't seem to take the time to make a post on the forum. Heck you can even blame me if you feels that's the problem ::)

The forum on itself is now almost 5 years old and that on itself is already an achievement, but I hope I don't speak for myself if I want to at least set the next goal on 10 years. My own personal dream would be to turn this place in a knowledge center 2.0, where people who are in the need of help with Final Fantasy related stuff could come and get help on any level. Be it on the level of somebody who's stuck during a normal play through to the place where discussions can take place on how to beat the game on low levels. We once where this kind of place with FFXII, but when FFXIII came around it seems people got split up and found other places as well.

That said I've already got a few things in my mind myself, which can roughly be placed into the following points:
- Cleaning up the amount projects around the forum and the website. During the course of these 5 years I've made quite a few side projects, one might say that one because a bigger flop than the other, but I think its time to clean up the house and remove most of them. In this cause it would be the wiki and the triple triad place. The first I will try to integrate into a new main website which has a more friendlier interface than the wiki itself and the later as it hasn't been updated in the past 2 years and in its current state it would be more of a back-door for hackers than its actually used.
- Second point would be to re-organise the staff. And this is definitely more a problem of my own than of the staff, but right now I've basically lost track of who of the staff members are even still active on the forum :-X
Those 2 points are most be on my part and I've got a few more ideas spooking around in my head, but I need to make these more specified than they are right now. As they are mostly just stuff I would like to do, but have no clue on how to, for example setting up some form of a final fantasy radio on this place.

Well as said before please post down your ideas or remarks and who knows what we might turn this place into ;D

I would't think a flood of new members would help if we didn't have a steady base-group to welcome them. Only to add to your list, Bram, I would say we really need to encourage the already familliar members to just put that little extra into the activity of the Sandsea and maybe the Game's Area (I'm being hypocrite now, since I haven't been there myself lately :x)

Next to that, I think you have a good start there.

To put it simple: This place in its current state would be really boring for any newcomers. People used to come and stay here because members were active. FFXII was the main FF game at the time and we had stuff that couldn't be found elsewhere. Other stuff like the Gold Saucer, Sandsea or the arts section were there to keep people who played FFXII but were not that interested. FFXII was the main reason why people visited this in the first place (and the kind community was the reason why they stayed). Over the course of the years, the rate at which new content appeared on the forum had slowed down and after FFXIII everyone just went their own way. Those who didn't like it left because there was nothing left to discuss about FFXII. Those who liked it left because barely anyone discussed the game. There were no tips and guides like for FFXII.

If we want to attract new members, we'll have to come up with some new content. FFXIV would be a good starting point especially if a bunch of current forum members is going to play the game. You could invest some time to write guides. You direct other players to this forum. Right now we're just a bunch of guys who have almost nothing to discuss, but who stay because of the nice old days and the friendship we made over the years.

I'd love to help out with any project you have in mind Bram, just like I did with the Wikia.

Want this place to shine as new.

Take care to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get.

Same here. I'll be a free man in a bit more than a month. I planned to stream FFXII Revenant Wings on the FFT channel to promote our marathon. Since I'm learning more and more about IT and computer science, maybe I'll also be able to help with the site.

If only I was skilled enough to try designing something that could give it a fresher look. Maybe after you've updated the main site.

Ah, I am rather busy as I just started helping around accountant of dad's small shipping business and the accountant is scheduled to take her materity leave in two weeks.. *wince* And I haven't heard from C-foxy-chan since January this year.. I will try to be more active, but no promises..
...Then there is Sunny, he is also in uni.. Maybe I will try drag him back if he is agreeable enough when I next meet him on skype.

I don't really have much time, but if anyone needs making charts or whatever, I will join in.. And will try participating on SandSea more often as well.

By the way, who know the relationship b/w a fox and a crow?

I would't think a flood of new members would help if we didn't have a steady base-group to welcome them.
We'll I'm not really talking about a flood of new members. In fact we don't really need new members to bring back some activity. The sprial on a forum can go either up or down, but it always includes more people => more acitivy => more new people => more acitvy (or in the downwards spiral replace more with less). So if we can keep activity on a steady base people are bound to come by eventually.

I'd love to help out with any project you have in mind Bram, just like I did with the Wikia.
We'll currently as I said I'm going to break down the wiki and replace our current main site with a Drupal CMS. For my work I'm working constantly with it and I figured out its time I rebuild our current site with it. It would give me even more control about stuff, its easier to learn that the wiki language as its basically the same as creating a page on the forum.

Together with that the bestiary will most likely be placed there as well. And since the "tougher" monsters need a strategy section anyway it might be an idea to hold those discussions on the forum. If it works it would help out activity on the forum and gives us a good input to keep updating the main site. And in-place of just textual stuff it might even be a nice idea to reopen our on youtube page and use that as a common upload place for helpful videos.

Getting back to what we tried to do during the ending of last year might also be to get the stream back up running on "regular" intervals. Which reminds me it might also be a good time to start planning the marathon schedules.

If it's needed I, too, could help with like, database...things. Like stuff that would require the use of Excel. I could probably make a License Board for XII on Excel if it's needed. Or something. I'm not a real helpful person. >_>

Regarding databases, I know some SQL. However, my knowledge of PHP equals zero. :-\

The idea would be to input everything through an CMS, so no SQL or PHP required. Only some knowledge of HTML, but more in the sense of knowing how HTML works than actually writing it yourself (we've got editors to do that for us :P).

Hi, I refuse to watch my favorite forum and community dying away like this, I will try and do the best on my part to bring this once awesome lively place back to its feet. Bram I would suggest we make FFTogether the number one place for anything and everything Final Fantasy AND RPG, not JPRG but all sorts of RPG. What do you think of transitioning FFT from a specific FF community into an RPG place? (With Final Fantasy being the community's favorite rpg of course.)

We could attract a lot of people, maybe start up a couple RPG related articles, guides, videos, discussions and what not. Also I think we should emphasize on video walkthroughs, guides, funny bits, cheats, tips, tricks, podcasts and marathons. We already have various youtubers in our community, we could contact them, reach out to those that could come back.

FFT is the coolest place on the internet ^_^ wait...yeah ^_^

I did try posting news articles a few months ago, but then I became too busy with school and I'm not someone who reads such articles on a daily basis anyway. I'm trying to stream regularly, usually during the weekends, but it's not easy to attract new people to the forums that way, especially when they see there have been no new posts for years. I can hardly get them to revisit my streams. >.<

Bringing life to a forum is always hard. Basically you'd already need to have a good community going to attract new people.

We do have a stream which might help with growing the community, but I believe chaos is currently the only one using it.
