Final Fantasy II is the second installment in the Final Fantasy franchise first released in 1988 for the SNES only for Japan. Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III were not released in other regions which caused Final Fantasy IV to be called Final Fantasy II in order to avoid confusion. This game was first released in other regions on the PlayStation in 2003, and later released for the Game Boy Advance with extra content such as Souls of Rebirth. It was also released alongside Final Fantasy I on the GBA. It was later enhanced with better graphics with the inclusion of Souls of Rebirth for the PlayStation Portable as well as the iPhone OS.

Final Fantasy II's story follows Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon; four youths whose parents were killed during an army invasion by the Palamacian Empire. Firion, Maria and Guy join a rebellion against the Empire. They later meet many allies who help them in their quest. Meanwhile Leon, the fourth youth, chooses to join the Palamecian Empire as a Dark Knight.

Final Fantasy II also introduced many elements of Final Fantasy franchise. This game was the first to included Chocobos and a character named Cid who would later become a recurring character throughout the franchise. It is not a direct sequel to the first Final Fantasy, and unlike the first one; received little attention and praise from gamers. Remakes, however, have garnered favorable reviews.

Characters

Final Fantasy II is the first game of the franchise to create characters with names, personalities and back stories. The game has a cast of four main playable characters, and five temporary playable characters. Later editions included Scott. However, he was only playable in versions with Souls of Rebirth. The three main playable characters (Leon is introduced later) never change, while the fourth character is always changing throughout by one of the temporary playable characters mentioned below.

Main Playable Characters

  • Firion - The main protagonist and friend of Maria, Guy and Leon. He joins the rebellion in order to get revenge on the empire for killing his family.
  • Maria - The female lead and friend of Firion and Guy, as well as the little sister of Leon. She wishes to find her brother, who mysteriously disappered after being attacked by the Empire.
  • Guy - The friend of Firion, Maria and Guy. He speaks in a strange manner, and has the ability to talk to animals.
  • Leon - Maria's older brother and friend of Firion and Guy. However, he became the Dark Knight of Palamecia and became the Emperor's follower. He serves as an antagonist throughout the game, but later joins his friends to fight against the Emperor.

Temporary Playable Characters

  • Minwu - A White Mage and Princess Hilda's advisor. Minwu can be considered the first White Mage of the series, as the White Mage introduced in the first Final Fantasy did not have any characterization.
  • Josef - A miner who mines Mythril for the resistance.
  • Gordon - Prince of Kashuan. He ran away after his brother Scott was killed in action. He fights with Firion and his friends in order to prove himself fit for the throne.
  • Leila - A pirate who attacks the party in order to rob them. However, her crew was too weak for the party and was easily defeated. Now she fights with them against the Empire.
  • Ricard Highwind - The last remaining Dragoon of Diest due to being stuck inside Leviathan. He fights with the party in order to avenge his fallen comrades who died at the Empire's hands. Ricard is the first dragoon in the series.
  • Scott - Prince of Kashuan and the brother of Gordon. He was never playable in early versions of the game and was first introduced as a playable character in Souls of Rebirth on the Game Boy Advance.
