Final Fantasy III (ファイナルファンタジーIII) is the third installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. This is not to be confused with Final Fantasy VI, which was released as Final Fantasy III when it first came out for the SNES in North America and Europe. The game was officially first released for the Famicom in 1990 exclusively for Japan. North America and Europe were never able to play it until 2006; when it came out for the Nintendo DS. A later version was made for the Wii Virtual Console on July 21, 2009, that was exactly the same as the Famicom version that came out 19 years prior.

The game follows four orphans chosen by the crystals to restore balance to the world. Although the first version of the game did not name the characters, the Nintendo DS version later gave the orphans names and gave them their own personalities and back grounds. The story itself however hasn't been altered despite the "new" heroes.

Characters

The NES version of Final Fantasy III had the Light Warriors, who were only given names by the player. In the Nintendo DS version, the characters were given names. There are a number of guest characters who join the party, but do not fight directly against enemies.

Playable Characters

Onion Knight from the NES version
  • Luneth - An orphan raised by Nina and Elder Topapa in the village of Ur. Adventurous by nature, his curiosity gets the better of him as he tumbles into a hole created by the great earthquake. He is the first to discover the crystal of light, and is later ordered by the crystal itself to find the other light warriors.
  • Arc - Another orphan raised by Topapa, and Luneth's best friend. Unlike Luneth, he prefers reading over gamboling in the wild. His studies endow him with great knowledge that more than makes up for his shyness. He is the second party member to join.
  • Refia - Raised in Kazus by the mythril smith Takka, whose rigorous training led her to run away from home... again. She is the third party member to join, found on Cid's Airship.
  • Ingus - A loyal soldier of King Sasune's army, he narrowly escaped the Djinn's curse. His prime concern is finding the missing Princess Sara. He is the last party member to join when he goes with the party to defeat the Djinn.
