Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings is the sequel to the twelfth installment of the Final Fantasy franchise for the Nintendo DS. The game was made as a real-time strategic RPG. The game's story takes place one year after the events of Final Fantasy XII, where Vaan, Penelo and numerous other friends from the original game's adventures takes them to the Floating Continent of Lemurés. Revenant Wings is also the flagship title of the Ivalice Alliance series.

Gameplay

The Stylus is a main use entirely throughout the game unlike other Final Fantasy DS games, with the optional exception of using the X button to conveniently combine all active characters and Espers into one group, and the A button to select and move the camera to one of your nearest summoning gates. Revenant Wings also features the return of the World Map. Battles are initated when the player undertakes a mission from the mission board, or by going to an area and participating in melee's such as Summoning and Monster Melee. Before a battle, the player has the opportunity to prepare for the battle by changing party and summon units and even take a look on what they are facing.

Each character is distinguished according to three types: melee, ranged and flying. Melee units can take out Ranged units with ease, but have a tough time attacking flying units. Ranged Units can take down Flying units easily, but are useless to hold their own against Melee units. Flying Units can attack Melee units with ease, but are brought down easily by Ranged units.

The gambit system from Final Fantasy XII makes a return, but at a more simpler approach. Each unit can have only one gambit, and will use that ability automatically. Each ability has a cool-down after use, and is easily interfered with Haste or Slow. Summons return and has a much larger role and has more summons than any other Final Fantasy game.

The Ring of Pacts
Summons are acquired using the Ring of Pacts, which each Esper having a specific element and some having no element at all. Some are even healing units like Penelo. During each battle, the player can summon them using Summoning Gates depending on the party's combined affinity. Some special Summons will have to defeated in order to use them, most notably the Espers from Final Fantasy XII.
