Final Fantasy XIII(ファイナルファンタジーXIII Fainaru Fantajī Sātīn) is the newest installment in the Final Fantasy franchise and part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation. The game was released in Japan on December 17, 2009 for the PS3 where it sold close to 1.7 million copies by the end of 2009. It was released in other territories on March 9th, 2010; where it was released on the Xbox 360 as well. The game is the first Final Fantasy to be released on the PlayStation 3. An International Version of the game has been confirmed to release in Japan on December 16th, 2010 on the Xbox 360.
The story takes place in the world of Cocoon and the lowerworld below it named Pulse. The people of Cocoon have been afraid of Pulse ever since the War of Transgressions, a war between Cocoon fal'Cie and Pulse fal'Cie. Many centuries after the war, a Pulse fal'Cie is found in the seaside city of Bodhum, which causes all the citizens who were in Bodhum at the time to be purged. The main heroine of the story, Lightning, participates in the purge in order to rescue her sister from fal'Cie clutches after being turned into a l'Cie.
To protect the citizens of Cocoon from being purged, Snow; Serah's fiancée, leads a group called NORA to rebel against PSICOM. While fighting through the warzone, Lightning; along with Sazh Katzroy, Hope Estheim, Oerba Dia Vanille and Snow find Serah in the Pulse Vestige. She turns to crystal, and the group goes to talk to the fal'Cie Anima to give Serah back. The fal'Cie refuses to listen to the party, and ends up fighting the fal'Cie. The party manages to kill the fal'Cie, but become l'Cie themselves in the process. Now they are fugitives of Cocoon, with a focus to fight and destroy Cocoon.

Playable Characters
- Lightning - The main protagonist and female lead of Final Fantasy XIII. Lightning was formally a member of the Bodhum Guardian Corps before she quit to save her sister Serah, who was made into a l'Cie. Her parents died years prior to the start of the game, and she threw away her childhood name and from there, took the name Lightning. Her main weapon of choice is a Gunblade and her Eidolon is Odin.
- Snow Villiers - The male lead of Final Fantasy XIII. He is the leader of a group of rebels known as Team NORA. He is also the boyfriend of Lightning's sister, Serah Farron. However, Lightning does not approve of Serah's new boyfriend. He travels to Hanging Edge to fight PSICOM and save his fiancee. His weapon of choice is his fists, however his main weapon is a coat to increase his strength. His Eidolons are the Shiva Sisters
- Oerba Dia Vanille - Vanille is a mysterious girl who keeps her past a secret from others. In reality, she is a L'Cie from Gran Pulse and a member of the Oerba clan along with Oerba Yun Fang. She becomes a member of the Purge and becomes involved in the events at the Hanging Edge. Her weapon of choice is a Rod and her Eidolon is Hecatonchier.
- Hope Estheim - A young boy from the city of Palumpolum. His mother is Nora Estheim, who was killed during the events at the Hanging Edge. Which leads him to blame Snow and hate him for the death of his mother. He became involved in the Purge along with those who were in the city of Bodhum at the time of the discovery of the Pulse Vestige. He is later made a l'Cie and is forced to fight with Lightning and the others. His weapon of choice is a boomerang and his Eidolon is Alexander.
- Sazh Katzroy - A civilian airship pilot and father of Dajh Katzroy, who was made into a Cocoon l'Cie days prior to the start of the game. He is a middle aged man with a afro, with a Chocobo living inside of it. He is a gentle person who is quick to forgive, as shown when Vanille reveals her true past to him. His weapons of choice are two pistols and his Eidolon is Brynhildr.
- Oerba Yun Fang - A mysterious looking woman who reveals herself as a L'Cie from Gran Pulse. She is a member of the Oerba clan along with Vanille. She wishes to find her friend and aims to help her complete the focus she was given. She also wishes to complete the player party's focus, even if it means the destruction of Cocoon as she does not want her new friends to turn into Cie'th. Her weapon of choice is a Spear that can split into two, and her Eidolon is Bahamut.
