Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII and a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis metaseries. First revealed at the "Square Enix 1st Production Department Premiere", Final Fantasy XIII-2 is set for a December 2011 release in Japan and will be released in the rest of the world in early 2012.
The game is set five years after the events of Final Fantasy XIII. Lightning has gone missing since then and everyone has come to believe that she is dead. However, Lightning's sister Serah does not believe her sister to be dead. Serah later joins up with a new character, Noel Kreiss, and goes on a search for Lightning.
Gameplay
Final Fantasy XIII-2's battle system will be more evolved then it's predecessor. The Paradigm Shift system returns and new gameplay elements, such as the Mog Clock and Cinematic Action, have been added. Enemies will be no longer visible on the field and battles will be entirely random. The Mog Clock appears when an enemy pops up on the screen, where the player must attack monsters on the field before the time's up to get the upper hand in the ensuing battle. If the player does not attack the enemy or cannot flee from the enemy before the Mog Clock goes to the red zone, the player will start with a penalty in the next battle, such as the ATB gauges being slowed. When enemies appear on the field, other nearby NPCs will fight the monster to weaken them when you fight them. In some important battles, players will be given timed button presses called Cinematic Action. There will also be Live sequences that appear when you progress through the story that can be controlled.
Another new gameplay element in Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the addition of Feral Link. When the player defeats an enemy in battle, the monster will crystallize and join the player's party. Monsters switch out of the battle depending on the Paradigm set, such as Behemoth being a Commando and a Scalebeast being a Sentinel.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 also introduces a new system called Live Trigger. It allows the player to change the conversation depending on the sentence chosen. There will be a total of four choices for each button on the controller.
Square Enix has stated that "Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be more player driven compared to the story driven Final Fantasy XIII." There will be a more open world and the game will have multiple endings.
