Final Fantasy / Re: Where did all the remakes go?
« on: January 02, 2013, 03:07:05 PM »
I don't even see why they are dragging out XIII, I'd prefer they use those resources to make the next addition to the series, or remake one of the older, and far better FF games instead of making another XIII which was just lackluster-mediocre at best by FF standards.

If they remake the VII through IX series, I'd prefer all the original mechanics remain intact, and they don't add new mechanics, and change the way the game was played.  I don't want them to try and "modernize" the combat.  Update the graphics, textures, character models, and other effects, and leave the rest of the game alone.  If they want to add a bonus dungeon or some new boss fights, or some new meta game gear, I'm not against that idea.

As for X and XII, the PCSX2 emulator does a very good job in improving the graphics, and lets you play games in HD.  Its mostly CPU dependent, requiring a modern quad core CPU to get the most out of it.

I took a snapshot of DQ8 running on PCSX2, running in 1920 x 1080 with AA turned up.  It looks really good for a PS2 game.

I used to have IV, but sold it years ago.

Current Generation / Path of Exile
« on: December 27, 2012, 12:07:13 PM »

This is an ARPG, basically a Diablo clone.   I heard about it and registered and got a free beta key for closed beta, and I'm pretty impressed with the game.  On Jan 23rd open beta starts, and all you have to do is download the client and its free to play.  I've stopped playing mostly because there is going to be a character/inventory wipe in the transition from closed to open beta, so further progress will be pointless at this stage.  But I plan on coming back for open beta.

Even in beta, I like it better than Diablo 3.  Challenge wise, the game starts out sorta tough in normal, which is not typical of a lot of games like this which start off sorta easy then spike up quickly.  The curve in this game starts off higher in normal, then tapers down a little, then picks back up in merciless, the 4th difficulty.  Its not nearly as gear dependent as Diablo 3, and character build is actually very important in this game.  The skill tree is reminiscent of FFX, and your spells/abilities are obtained from gems, which ironically function similar to materia in FF7, all of your armor and weapons have colored slots, which can be linked so you can put something like "added fire" on your best melee attack skill like Heavy strike, or ground slam.  The gems can also be removed and gain XP just by being slotted, and tier up whether you use them or not.  You can even remove and sell/trade for gems with other players.

The only thing I got a serious gripe about with the game is the loot system on teams.  They give you a very small window to grab loot, and chances are if you are ranged, melee will be able to beat you to your drops after the timer goes off.  If Diablo 3 did 1 thing right, it was instanced looting, which eliminated ninja looters who just bolted toward everything that looked shiny.  Unless this is changed, then people need to stick to teaming with only people they can trust not to ninja the good drops.

A small gripe, but not a serious one is the only currency in this game is orbs.  There is no gold in this game.  These orbs can be used as currency to buy stuff at the vendors, or even barter with other players.  Also these orbs can be used to gamble.  Like for example, orb of transmutation, a low tier orb can turn a normal item into a random magic item.  Or an orb of alchemy, a mid tier orb can turn a normal into a random rare.   The problem is that its much more likely than not that if you use an orb of alchemy, that you will get an item that is worth far less than the barter value of the orb you just wasted, and even more likely you rolled a junk rare that isn't even worth using.  Usage of the more valuable orbs are only worth it at end game, so the crafting system for 90% of the game is non-existent or simply not worth it or viable in the low-mid levels.

Also any orb can be obtained at any level, that means a new player could get lucky and find an exalted orb, the highest tier orb, but they can also turn around and waste it on a low level item without being aware of how valuable the item was they just burned and didn't even get anything good to show for it.  1 exalted orb could be bartered for a decent piece of high level gear, meaning a piece of equipment with decent rare modifiers and 5 linked slots.  With 5 linked slots, you could link your main attack to 4 support gems.  6 links are the best, but they are exceptionally rare, most players will never obtain one.  You could find a 6 slot and attempt to link it with orbs of fusing which reroll the links, but its about a .3% change to link 6 slots, which means you could burn 300+ orbs easily and not get one.  And those aren't exactly cheap.

Considering the above, I don't think the economy is going to work, because a lot of players are going to realize that gambling orbs is far too costly, and the value will drop, and then only gear will hold value, and it start costing a whole lot more of these "rare" orbs to barter for any decent piece of gear.  They also don't have a way to market gear in this game, no auction house, they got a forums, but example, you find a pretty nice bow, trading it for a more universal currency still isn't going to be easy, which will cause a lot of people to just vendor stuff rather than try and take the time to sell it.  There is almost no market for low to mid level low-mid tier rares in this game, because most people just vendor them, because you can combo vendor 1 rare for each equipment slot, and get a chaos orb, which is an upper-middle tier orb.

But, the game is still in beta, and hopefully they make some changes to where it will work long term.

JRPG games / Re: Tales of Xillia coming to North America / Europe in 2013

Graces F seriously disappointed me, and I'm not sure if I'm gonna get Xilia if its anywhere near as grindy as Graces F.  The battle system was decent, but the characters weren't likable, and the story was very mediocre.  The rest of the game other than that was terrible.  I hated the character development, and itemization in that game with a passion.

Current Generation / Re: Anyone buy any games recently?
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:31:56 AM »
Last one I bought was Tales of Graces F, and honestly I didn't like it.  The game was too grindy, which did nothing but take away from the rest of the game for me.  Grind for titles, grind for dualize shards, grind to temper weapons, grind for more eleth mixer, grind for completion books, grind for fetch requests, plenty of missible stuff.  Add it all together and you got a typical dumbed down modern RPG with no substance.  I sold the game to my brother, so I recovered the loss from a bad game.  If you like grinding in RPGs then Tales of Graces F is probably your game.

I've moved to the PC version, even considering its downsides, like people hacking with trainers and toggling god mode in PVP.  The reason is they have pretty much eliminated all efficient ways of leveling up without cheating, and patched the BB glitch, which I used to make PVP builds.  Not these low level twinks that destroy new players, but level 100-120 builds.  Experimentation is no longer viable on the PS3 version due to them nerfing the soul gains in the forest, and patching the BB glitch.  I no longer find the normal game interesting or challenging, because I beat the game with a level 1 pyromancer months ago.

Current Generation / Re: Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma is probably the best recent RPG I've played since Dark Souls.  I'm more or less done with the game though, over 200 hours played, got 2 level 200 Arisens and a level 130ish.  I've gotten dozens of online UR kills.  One Arisen is level 200, max STR gains, and the other is max MAG gains, and the level 130ish is split gains.  Also got a max STR pawn and max MAG pawn to go along with them.

I found it for $8.99 used.  I played it years ago but never finished it because I couldn't get past Dhoulmagus, and I had applied my points very poorly.  Basically I missed all of the best skills up to that point.  This time I'm going with Sword/Courage(spear also when I find skill seeds) on Hero, Axe/Fisticuffs on Yangus, Whip/Staff on Jessica, and Bow/Staff on Angelo.  The thin air attack with Fisticuffs is really good, and I think that skill goes well on Yangus, even though he has the least amount of MP, fisticuffs gives him a couple low MP cost hit-all attacks, including boulder toss later on which he doesn't get from any other weapon but the 100 scythe skill, which is 30mp to use.  A lot of fights in this require you have 2 dedicated healer/support, which is why I gave staff to Jessica and Angelo, for the free mid heal, caduceus.  Also twin dragon lash with Jessica is deceptively strong, I'm certain the damage modifier is somewhere between x3 and x4, etc 20-22 with a normal attack and it can do about 38-42x2 on a single enemy, which is more damage than Hero or Yangus can do on 1 enemy at that point.  Which makes that a devastating attack for single target boss fights, and I think it does even more damage to dragon type mobs.  I'm currently playing it on PCSX2 emulator, even though I got a working PS2 because the low res PS2 games hurt my eyes, and I can play it at 1080 resolution on the emulator.

Final Fantasy XII / Re: Anyone else notice the symbol on the Genji Shield?
« on: February 15, 2012, 12:30:25 PM »
It is a swastika.

The Swastika is an ancient religious symbol used in several cultures, Hitler just hijacked it and rotated it slightly. He had a thing for spiritual symbols and mythology.

I'm aware of that, supposedly it can be traced back to ancient India as its origin.  But still you figure they would have put better thought into putting that on a shield.  I'm sure few people even noticed, I've been playing this game since it first came out and just now noticed it.

I never really payed attention to it until I zoomed in sorta close, its a swastika.  What was Square Enix thinking?

Zodiac Job System / Re: Party Setup
« on: February 15, 2012, 11:12:45 AM »
Vaan - Monk
Ashe - Samurai
Balthier - Knight
Fran - Red Mage
Basch - Uhlan
Penelo - Black Mage

Vaan - Famrit (White magic 10), Chaos (White magic 11,12), Ultima (swiftness x2), Zodiark (White magic 13)
Ashe - Zeromus (magic lorex2), Zalera (blood swords), Belias (libra)
Balthier - Hashmal (White magic 8,9), Mateus (White magic 6,7)
Fran - Exodus (heavy armor 8,9,10), cuchulainn (black magic 9,10), Shemhazai (white magic 7)
Penelo- Adrammelech (hand bombs)
Basch- none

None of the choices above were difficult ones, they all seemed like no brainers to me except for Adrammelech who nobody really needed terribly bad so I just gave it to penelo.

I thought about it for awhile, and that is actually the most balanced group I could come up with, so I went with it.  I normally roll with Monk, Knight, Red mage as my main group.  If I need physical attackers, I go with Monk, Samurai, Uhlan, or if I need ranged I go with Red Mage, Black Mage, Uhlan.

Vaan as Monk seems like a very solid choice in any group.  So much utility with monk class, that its hard to pass up, has the breaks that are the most useful, as well as most of the best White magics (minus faith) which I do have on Knight.  I found Monk was better with bare hands for a decent part of the game than with the best pole you could get at that point.  Early on up to the Raithwall's tomb or so, Monk was doing a bit more damage than anyone else using just bare hands.

Samurai is a class that shines at level 99 with genji gear + Masamune I, before then its mediocre IMO and I almost never used Samurai through 90% of the game, because it was mediocre.  With brave + faith + berserk samurai Ashe hits about 14k in a single hit, and frequently gets multiple hits, so its pretty devastating end game, only second in DPS to Uhlan Basch with Brave + berserk + Zeitengrate bow which hits frequently for 35k hits and well over 60k crits, even on the strongest enemies.  I can throw oil on mobs and use fiery arrows and double that amount but haven't felt the need to.

I also found Red Mage to be pretty good, and found myself with a Red mage in my group almost all the time, and much preferred it over Black Mage.  Red Mage is just as devastating with -aga spells as Black Mage is, and cura heals for over 8k with faith up at level 99, which is very, very good.  I also found Death being a very good spell with 100% to kill even many high HP targets that would take my melee characters several hits to take down.  If you need a character to throw that Trango Tower on, Red mage makes good use of it.  Also Oil + Ardor is pretty devastating, does about 140k to an oiled mob weak vs fire

Best game of all time?  Hardly.  I wouldn't even rank it as one of the better FF games.  I'd put it somewhere between the middle and bottom.

All these FF games I thought were better:

No particular order.

Below that list I'd have FFXIII

I can play SNES games on my Iphone, or on my PSP.  Pretty sure a DS can also play SNES games.

Here is a couple screenshots:

The elemental fury shout doesn't work on enchanted weapons, and the + attack speed with the shout is better for the high damage weapons than a tiny bit of elemental damage.

Also here is my team:

Me + 2 Dremora Lords + Lydia.  Using the hammer above.
