Well, it's coming down to the wire, but I'm 99% certain that the hard drive is dead. My brother places the PS3 to the left of the cable box (major heat source, and the vent of the PS3 is on the right) and insists it's well-ventilated. When I placed the PS3 elsewhere, he yelled.

It's funny, I get the reverse Seitengrate, and by that I lose 500 hours of Star Ocean 4 like that.

It's a low % chance I would like to avoid...

Update: The hard drive was taken out, and the PS3 was tested for YLOD. It's still YLOD'd, but I think it's safe to say the hard drive is fine.


Update 2: Well, my dad successfully reflowed the mobo and now it's working. I don't want to take any chances with the PS3, so I'm going to get a 250 GB slim soon.


Update 3: My dad and brother have decided to get a 120 GB instead, and I'm researching the Data Transfer Utility.


FINAL UPDATE: My PS3 successfully Data Transfer'd from 60 GB to my 120 GB slim, so now I'm safe!

It's really funny because the chance of your PS3 getting a YLOD is like 5% and the chance of a Wii bricking is about 40% and the chance of the XBox getting an RRoD is about 80%. It's like they design these things to break.

Yes, I had it and we had a topic going on it with by the minute news the day it happened. What a bummer it was, couldn't get onto PSN all day. Some people removed the internal battery which fixed the problem. I went off to work with the idea of doing the same if the problem wasn't fixed when I got home. Luckily it had fixed by then because it passed 12 a.m. GMT, which was 6 p.m. my local time.

Because I've been literally cooking my PS 3 by playing hours and hours at a time, I back up my game data on a thumb drive nightly. There is no way I'm losing my WKC file, nearly 6 months of work.

The newer models of 80 GB were unaffected, well at least mine wasn't.

Anyway, I haven't really heard many instances of this until recently. Is this more prevalent on the new PS3 models or does that have nothing to do with it?
